Time flies! My time with the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum residency (@faam_air) is ending in less than a week. I would like to share one of my works in the residency exhibition Parallax: What Has Always Been There, on view from 19 September to 5 October 2026, at Artist Cafe Fukuoka (@artistcafe_fukuoka). There are so many people I need to thank for their kindness during this process, and a proper acknowledgement will come soon. Artwork Description: Northern Wind, Southern Wind 2026 Acrylic paint, camouflage cream and ink on linen Painting: 60.6cm x 41cm (each, 8 parts total) Presented on custom-built wooden display tables. Photos by Ittoku Kawasaki. In 1942, the winds of war brought Fukuoka-born painter Nakamura Kenichi down south to Singapore where he served as a wartime artist. His paintings such as Kota Bharu (1942) and Naval Battle off Malaya (1942) served as official records and propaganda for the Japanese imperial military. I first encountered these artworks in history books and exhibitions about the Japanese Occupation in Singapore, and they are unconsciously embedded into my memories of WWII. More than 80 years later in 2026, a different wind brings me up north to Fukuoka, Nakamura’s home town. Northern Wind, Southern Wind is a panoramic painting that highlights major events during WWII from the perspectives of Malaya and Fukuoka. It combines imagery from Nakamura’s wartime works together with archival photos and other visual media to tell stories from multiple voices. By appropriating and transforming these images, I hope to reimage what a war painting can look like and do, while calling attention to the context of these original references. As a nod to my experiences in the Singapore army, I mixed military camouflage cream into the colours used in this painting. The work is presented on a custom display that evokes architectural elements from Fukuoka Gokoku Shrine and the nonextant Syonan Shrine.

NO EXISTE UNA “MEJOR” RESIDENCIA. 🇯🇵 Una residencia puede ser una oportunidad para investigar, producir, conocer una nueva escena artística, trabajar con una comunidad o simplemente disponer de tiempo y contexto para desarrollar tu práctica. Pero no todas funcionan de la misma manera. Por eso, en esta lista no hay ranking. Hay programas con enfoques muy diferentes: investigación, producción, intercambio cultural, trabajo con comunidades, prácticas contemporáneas, diálogo con Asia y proyectos interdisciplinarios. Y algo importante: que una residencia esté en Japón no significa automáticamente que sea adecuada para ti. Antes de postular, revisa: → quiénes fueron los residentes anteriores → quién selecciona a los artistas → qué cubre realmente la financiación → qué se espera de ti durante la residencia → qué actividades forman parte del programa → qué tipo de conexiones profesionales puedes construir Y, sobre todo, comprueba siempre la convocatoria directamente en la web oficial. The past 2,5 months in Fukuoka hasn’t come to an end. At first I expected to be confronted with the past (part of my family comes from that area in Japan), but I was instead gifted with a deep sense of present and future. And all I can say for now is that this rippling effect is thanks to the incredible people I shared this time with. Momoko san, Kenji san, Kaoru san, Fumi san, Tomo san, Midori san, Izumi san, Arpita san, Fuyuka san, Yen-chi san, Matsuo san, Ushijima san, Tsuda san, to name just a few, have helped me transform something that I’m still trying to understand. The work I made while in Fukuoka is the biggest work I’ve done so far and it’s not a surprise. It’s those relationships that can build big things, like a monument of change. Because something has changed and I haven’t done this alone. We never do. <3
