Painting wildlife with a splash of abstract and a dash of whimsy—basically animals with personality are my very favourite subjects😄

🖼️ Fab Leydecker - 'Queen of Chaos,' Size: 20 x 16, Medium: Acrylic on canvas

🍁 Fab Leydecker is a French-born, Calgary-based painter whose boundless creativity is rooted in a lifelong connection to the natural world. Born in Bayonne, France, and having served as France's first female jockey, Leydecker immigrated to Canada to ride horses and develop her art. Today, she is inspired by the rugged wilderness, wildlife, and outdoor spaces of Alberta.

👸🏻 'Queen of chaos' is a highly vibrant, whimsical piece that beautifully marries folk art with a raw, neo-expressionist aesthetic. The painting centres on an empowered, crowned figure standing proudly in a dark dress dotted with blue accents and bright, polka-dot teal sleeves. She is enveloped by a bustling world filled with text, multiple crowns, and dark ravens, all set beneath an energetic, blazing red sun. Mirroring Leydecker's philosophy that art should bring smiles and playful energy, the piece captures a scene overflowing with bright, celebratory colours and expressive humour.

🎓 Heavily self-taught, Leydecker formally graduated in equine studies in Chantilly, France. She has continuously challenged her artistic boundaries by exploring sculpture, abstract forms, and mixed-media landscapes.

🎨 Leydecker’s signature style blends elements of classical animal portraiture, abstract mark-making, and vibrant folk art. Her tactile creative process relies on combining acrylic paints, structural modelling paste, and raw pastel sticks to produce heavily layered, textured surfaces that radiate spontaneous movement.

🖌️ Beyond her personal studio projects, Leydecker has achieved notable acclaim in the North American Western art scene. Her physical works have been juried into prestigious Western art showcase auctions in both Canada and the United States.

🌎 Leydecker’s distinct canvases are found in numerous private collections internationally, and her monumental pieces have been recently acquired by Fort Calgary for their permanent collection.

Thank you, @fabl_studio , for the incredibly thoughtful gift. 💚

It’s hard to put into words what something like this means. Seeing his face, being reminded of him in such a special way, brought back so many memories all at once. It was such a kind gesture, and one I’ll treasure forever. Losing Savage has left a hole that can never truly be filled. As much as I know I’ll continue moving forward with my dogs and my sports, I find myself worrying about the future and the comparisons that inevitably creep into my mind. Savage was never just another dog. He was my partner, my teammate, and a huge part of my life. The bond we shared was something incredibly special, and I catch myself wondering if I’ll ever have that again?! I know every dog is different and every relationship is unique, but right now it’s hard not to compare the future to what I had with him. I hope one day it’s just a little easier.

So thank you, Fab. Not just for the gift, but for giving me a reminder that it’s ok to compare and what will be, will be and I’ll move forward with new relationships with new dogs. I appreciate you. 💚🐾

Some dogs leave paw prints on our hearts. Savage left his name written across mine and he will forever stay there. 💚

If there are any crooked paintings in the gallery, we know exactly who to blame 😉
(Just kidding — we’re professionals here, folks.)
Tarek has absolutely worked his socks off this week hanging Steve Coffey’s new show while curating the rest of the gallery. We’re loving the transformation and can’t wait to share it all with you!
