RADICAL FUTURES at @factorytheater 👽🎭

This world premiere play pairs hallucinogenic cocktails with sci-fi sub genres. It’s a funny and fascinating look at friendship and what builds and breaks connection all told through the versatile lens of sci-fi. From the silly to the serious moments this cast is amazing and this set will have you wondering if you wandered into a local dive bar. Also, a special shoutout for the drink coaster programs. So cool! Definitely try and see this one if you can. Catch it through November 21st.

Thanks for having me @factorytheater and @shoutchicago.

This Friday, The Factory Theater opens Season 32: In Pursuit of Happiness with RADICAL FUTURES by B.Z. Florida. While I’ve been working at it for a moment now, Season 32 is my first start-to-finish process as Literary Manager for the ensemble. At The Factory, our whole ensemble is considered and invited to partake in season selection. My job is largely to keep track of submitted materials, lead ensemble discussions of the plays up for consideration, and bring in material that excites and highlights the ensemble.
RADICAL FUTURES was a script that I encountered first during The Workshop, an eight week course I lead that provides feedback and community for local playwrights. While B.Z.’s script always fit the ever-elusive Factory mold as a pitch (a sci-fi anthology set in a dive bar), the material needed work. But B.Z. put in the work, long after The Workshop had ended and continued to refine and develop up to the consideration deadline.
New work, untested stories, will always be volatile. Unlike B.Z.’s usual medium of prose, a play does not exist intimately in the reader’s mind; it must proclaim itself loud and decisive to a crowd of people.
This play is sharp, fast, bold, and, if I may say, radical. It’s a big beating heart of a show brought to life by some of the most talented theatermakers this city has to offer. I’m so grateful it gets to be in the world for you. I’m thankful I got to help bring it into the world for you.
Produce new plays. Support new work.

What does it mean to find your authentic self in an industry built around auditions, rejection, and outside expectations?

We are sooooo lucky to have Brittney Brown on the couch.

ADVANCE MAN by @strawdogtheatre 🧑‍🚀🎭

You know a show has you hooked when you go into full researcher mode at intermission. That’s exactly what happened at ADVANCE MAN. This play is part family drama, part sci-fi epic, and entirely riveting. Also, be warned, this is the first part of a trilogy, and you will leave the theater needing to know what happens next. This amazing cast has you locked in from the very beginning. The scenic design, projections, and lighting create a world that has hints of normalcy, but clearly show something is off. If you consider yourself a sci-fi fan, you do not want to miss this. You can catch it at the @factorytheater through September 27th.

Thank you for the invite, @theaterfanchicago.
