Leander grew up in the Nilgiris and attended St Joseph’s before leaving for Bangalore to study aircraft engineering. That decision led to a decade-long career with Jet Airways beginning in 2008. Working in aircraft maintenance, he spent his days calibrating and servicing commercial jet engines. It was demanding work with little room for mistakes. “It was a high-stress job,” he says. “Anything went wrong and you’d be the first person they would question.” For ten years, aviation was his world. Then Jet Airways collapsed. Soon after, Covid brought the country to a standstill. The life he had built in Bangalore suddenly no longer made sense. So he came home.

This being my first time interviewing a teacher, the first question I asked her was slightly cheeky, “What sort of student were you in school?” I got a warm smile and she replied, “I studied hard, always came in the top three of my class.” Having heard this, the remainder of my questions seemed a tad pointless. But as the conversation flowed freely, I learned a lot about this formidable and determined lady.

In honour of his hundredth birthday in October 2026, Sangeetha Shinde sits down with him and his daughter, Sunaina Mathews, to discover the stories behind the legend.

There are some lives that cannot be measured merely in years. They are measured instead in journeys undertaken, hardships overcome, lives touched and memories created. The life of Dr (Lt Col Retd) Trilok S Chhabra is one such story. Born on October 2, 1926, in Sialkot, now part of Pakistan, Dr Chhabra has witnessed a century of history unfold before his eyes as of today. He has lived through the British Raj, the trauma of Partition, the birth of independent India, wars, social change and technological revolutions. Through it all, he has remained remarkably grounded, guided by a deep sense of duty, service and gratitude.
