@blakehornsbymusic’s “Brugmansia” is out today! It’s a fantastic album and deserving of all the praise it has gotten so far.

When the inspiration strikes, I make music videos from saved iphone footage. Please enjoy this aqua-delic journey set to “Rishikesh” off the new album!

The tapes are delayed sadly but I will ship you a tape if you buy the digital and want one. Here’s another track from the album which is available to listen in full on youtube. Announcing MSV-03! “Same Old” by Psaltery (@psalterylalala) is out 9/5 on @monadnocksound .

We are so excited about this release! Paris Watel Young (aka “Burnout”- guitar/banjo/vocals) was our roommate over the last year and this album was written, incessantly practiced, and recorded with drummer Howard Stewart (aka “Squall”) at our place. Having heard these tunes a million times we were either gonna love ‘em or hate ‘em- and thankfully, it’s the former.

Psaltery derive their music from the intricate patterns at play in various folk traditions, electronic music, and needlework. The first single, “Soul Breathes Easy” is a nifty slice of avant-folk pop recalling late 90s Chicago-schoolers Joan of Arc and Califone. Lyrically, Elliot Smith’s breezy melancholia is an easy resemblance. Paris can play Jeff Parker’s Forfolks front to back and you’ll be hearing those jazz chops all over this record. Howard ain’t no slouch either, and his tasteful, polyrhythmic timekeeping highlights a deep musical connection between the duo.

We can’t wait to share the rest of this album with y’all.

@robotrattle (Lost in a Sea of Sound) reviews MF Duo Band (@themodernfolk):

“Guitar work by Josh and Austin holds values to a plethora of beautiful melodies played in preceding decades…The tracks on this composition have energy and tilt more towards the realm of uplifted spirits from the serenity they hopefully reside”

Out tomorrow on @bandcamp Friday! The Modern Folk Duo Band by @themodernfolk. This album is an introspective trip of droning acoustic folk and extra terrestrial country blues - a perfect sound for the transition of fall into winter, when dusk produces the most enchanting sky and an eerie sense of calm descends. Sit out on your back porch or by a campfire, maybe roast a bone 💨 and take in the vibe.

The preorder is now up for @themodernfolk Modern Folk Duo Band cassette. I lovingly home dubbed each of these suckers in real time from the master so they sound great. I even put the whole album on both sides for your convenience.

This one is gonna be out on Bandcamp Friday (12/6) so save your beans till then if you can. If you can’t wait, go ahead and grab it.

If you already bought the digital from J Moss and want the physical, let me know - your tape purchase will include free download codes for any two Modern Folk releases of your choice! Enjoy!

Thrilled to announce that the Modern Folk Duo Band by @themodernfolk will take physical form as MSV02.

The Modern Folk is a prolific, loose collective spearheaded by Portland’s Josh Moss — inveterate champion of underground music and well-travelled denizen of New Weird America.

Through dozens of releases on some of the coolest labels around (@eiderdownrecords , @warhenrecords , @ramble_records , @echodelickrecords ), The Modern Folk has mined traditional American music and filtered it through psychedelic music of all stripes — Fahey meets Berman meets Beefheart with Bigfoot there, too, rounding out the crew.

“MF Duo Band” finds the group in instrumental mode (except the lovely barking dog on “Toki”) featuring Moss (guitar, harmonica), Austin Richards (guitar, shruti box), and Trevor Schorey (drums). This semi-composed, semi-improvised collection of haunted meditations and stoned blues ramblers unites the cosmic with the terrestrial: a real “vibe” as the kids say.

Josh was an early and ardent supporter of the Fall Break label with his old blog so I’m particularly grateful to get to release these tunes. Tapes are out December 6th which I believe will be a Bandcamp Friday 😉 😉 The album is already streaming so go ahead, give it a listen, and get lost in the sauce. 👽 🎸🍄

Lost in a Sea of Sound (@robotrattle) wrote some very nice words on @blakehornsbymusic “A Village of Many Springs”:

“This is a beautiful release that captures traditional and experimental, like the last part of both Cathedral Falls and Bury My Soul in the Linville River. Blake Hornsby is beautifully creative offering both a warm nostalgia and a push to the sonic thresholds of where music can go. There are no limits, but with this in mind A Village of Many Springs is a gorgeous listen and has been on repeat for a good while.”

Really appreciate the review!
