At 11 years old, writing entered my life like a tsunami that, in a single crashing wave, swept away everything I thought I knew about myself and unearthed something new. A whisper that grew into an awakening. I’ll never forget the instant the voices emerged inside me. It was probably the closest I’ll ever know to experiencing true magic—like a witch coming into her powers.
One voice winked to life. The smallest spark in the black cavern of my mind. Then it grew into two, then twenty. And before long my head was clamouring with nothing but noise as story after story was begging—no, screaming to be told.
My fingers couldn’t fly across the keys fast enough as I delved into vivid worlds and embarked on daring quests. I lived in those pages. Loved. Yearned. Lost and wept.
I say all this because you need to understand how deep to the core writing was for me. Every word wrenched from my lungs, etched from my bones, soaked in my blood.
I didn’t just write—I channeled.
Then at the end of 2024, everything changed. Pain, no … soul destroying grief silenced everything inside of me. I was walled behind heartbreak. Lost to it. I could feel nothing. Hear nothing.
VOTS was the first time I ever thought a story would never get told. How could I write if I can’t feel? Or hear when the only sound echoing inside me was sorrow?
But I was under contract. And failure was not an option. Not unless I wanted to abandon my dreams but the last vital piece of me that held what little remained together. I had to find a way to draw blood from an empty vein, pull breath out of collapsed lungs. Every word was a struggle, every chapter a war I didn’t know if I would win.
I wasn’t just writing. I was rebelling against the overwhelming urge to lay down and never get back up.
My suffering became the foothold for Nimah’s journey; together she and I walked hand in hand through the chasm of our grief, confronting our ghosts along the way. Her path to survival helped me find the strength to ensure my own.
This book is more than a culmination of my hopes and dreams, she is a physical testament of my healing. She is my triumph.
And I couldn’t be more proud✨✨✨
