Last month, I spent time on the other side of the world in Aulus-les-Bains, France, on a music residency at @camp_fr 💕 Our cohort was blessed to be mentored by the absolutely mind blowing Loraine James @setfiretoloraine to learn about live performance :,)

We swam in waterfalls, took field recordings, walked in the mountains, spent time experimenting with sounds, discovered new music together and chased dogs around the beautiful residency lol 🥹🫶 Aulus-Les-Bains has a fascinating history, where syphilis patients used to visit the thermal baths in the hopes that the healing waters and natural beauty would cure their syphilis….. And women used to hike up the mountains to collect large lumps of ice, to give to their husbands to sell in the village lol

While completely delirious from jet lag loool, so so grateful to have been able to learn from the phenomenal and incredibly generous Loraine, and from all of our lovely, inspiring cohort, @polonakasal @insolvnsea @louismorgan.wav @san_huan_ @falloverfourleafclovers @thisiskatelim @mozemusic_ @kevin_frieden @silvergrn @bronamartin @stillunknowndelma @zoozamusic @__jsq__ @louisemarieelizabe @stelloid + Klaus!! :,)
❤️😭 j’adore and miss you all ~ thank you for such a special time. I love learning together. Endless blessings and swag!!!!! xx

NEW INTREPID LIFE FORMS EMANCIPATE QUEER DESIRES

Come witness alien contusions and rogue life growths crafted from excursions into the inner wilderness.

Through sculpture, sewing and song, we heal our wounds through creative abstraction, happening upon hope among chaos. These beings and their songs animate our individual experiences of queer joy and resistance. It’s a messy but vibrant menagerie embodying conflicting feelings of hope and grief.

Enjoy bathing among the raucous joyous chorus of creatures who will not be silenced.

Please join us to mark the opening of The little guys that come out of me: sit and listen to them, a new exhibition by Natasha and Ezra Munro and Lucky Pollock.

Through a “tag team” collaborative process spanning 12months, siblings Natasha and Ezra Munro crafted a series of elaborate and sometimes explicit beings from donated and found objects, clay, fabric and printed materials. Lucky Pollock and Natasha Munro then sonically responded to the creatures, with Lucky’s sound works being crafted on a Nintendo DS.

With the exhibition, the artists consider whether “the playful yet confronting nature of these creatures and their songs enable a more realistic depiction of queer expression. The aim of these works was to spark joy (and possibly shock), to grieve but also to play. Some of these beings are almost toy-like, but perhaps too confronting to quite be so. The bitcrushed sound of the Nintendo combined with Lucky’s hyperactive and frenetic compositional style amplify this feeling.”

Queer joy means living freely, openly and honestly in alignment with one’s emotions and desires. Unfortunately in our current world this also means embodying that which some simply repress, refuse to understand, or outright scrutinise. The creature-like creations of Ezra and Natasha do not gloss over the pain that is caused by this oppression, nor are they completely overwhelmed by it, integrating these conflicting aspects to become a dynamic gathering of symbolically hopeful life forms.

🗓 Opening: Thursday 8 October, 5.30pm with refreshments from @libertybrewingnz
Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 12 – 4pm
Closes: Saturday 21 November

CMKK x ANALEMMA x LOUDNESS WALL

A CMKK-collaboration with Analemma and Fynjy, this Saturday, 04.07, @forumstadtpark

Analemma is a new local collective whose goal is to create spaces for alternative electronic music in Graz. Their name comes from the term “analemma” — the figure of eight path of the sun, traced from the same place and time over a year.
So, naturally, the collaboration between the CMKK and Analemma brings electronic/computer music and sound art to the grass field of Stadtpark: alternative sounds until the sun makes its path to the horizon.

The daylight session will be filled with different genres and types of music, including IDM, ambient and experimental DJ-sets and live sets with noise, field recordings, drony, moody, electronic and acousmatic sounds.
We’ll be laying on the grass field in front of Forum Stadtpark. Don’t forget to bring your blankets, sun screen and sunglasses!

And after the sun goes down, we move to the basement for the second part of the day: the real noise contest, coming from the collaboration between CMKK and Fyjny.

If the first contest from FYNJY “Stop the Loudness War” was about the war on the dynamic range in the music industry and the artists were awarded for the most dynamically diverse music, the second edition - “Break the Loudness Wall” is dedicated to the destruction of the loudness norm and to the exploration of the noise genre as such. The artists will compete in 2 categories - live sets and fixed media - for the prizes in each category for best dB SPL*, and for Real True Noise - the audience’s choice.

*Decibel Sound Pressure Level
Earplugs and open ears are highly recommended!

During both events, there will be a bar available at the venue.
