THE CLUBS OF RESCUE SPORT: FALSE BAY
SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

Founded in 1959, False Bay Surf Lifesaving Club patrols Muizenberg Beach and is one of Lifesaving Western Cape’s clubs represented in the Rescue Sport Series.

Season 1 saw False Bay finish 10th overall with 51 points and 5 entries.

Then came Season 2.

Entries jumped with a 960% increase in participation, while their points climbed to 67!

That growth earned False Bay the 2025/26 Club Growth Award. 🏆 Taking home a well deserved R25 000 for their efforts.

Racing under the scull cap colours of green, white and red, False Bay is back for Season 3.

False Bay, we’ll see you on the start line.

RESCUE STORIES | FALSE BAY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

When a real rescue happens, every second matters.

Carlton Baron and Daniel Minter take us through a rescue their False Bay lifeguards responded to at Muizenberg Beach in 2013, breaking down what happened, the actions taken and what it took to bring the patient safely back to shore.

They also talk about how the training they do to compete in the Rescue Sport Series helps develop the skills, speed and decision-making that lifeguards rely on when responding to real rescues.

And this is the connection at the heart of Rescue Sport Series:

The skills used to save lives in real rescues are the same skills lifeguards train, practise and race in rescue sport.

Every swim. Every paddle. Every board race. Every run. Every transition.

Because when the moment comes, there is no starting gun.
No second chance.
No room for hesitation.

You train for the race.
You race for the rescue.
You rescue to save a life.

YOU HAD TO BE THERE.

A game of Survival. Three enter. Two remain.

Milnerton. Season 2.

Jordan Minter — False Bay.
Jay Samuels — Clifton.
Zane Briesies — Marlin.

From a field of 49, three remained. Millimetres separated them as they fought for the final two batons at the end of the flags pit.

In flags, there is rarely much between them.

Sometimes you see the opportunity.
Sometimes you have to make it.

And when it comes, you go.

You had to be there.

Photographer Spotlight | Lisa Vickers

A familiar face behind the lens, Lisa Vickers has been photographing the Rescue Sport Series since our very first competition at Fish Hoek. We’re stoked to have her on our photo team, a passionate community member who captures the action as well as some of the best behind-the-scenes moments from the beach.

For our Black & White Photographer Series, Lisa handpicked some of her favourite images from season 2. We also asked her what makes lifesaving such a compelling sport to photograph:

“Lifesaving is a visually powerful sport because it combines raw athleticism with high-stakes drama. The contrast of speed, strength, and the ocean’s unpredictability creates striking, dynamic images that capture both human determination and the elemental force of nature. Every race simulates real rescue scenarios, so the intensity feels authentic.”

Thanks, Lisa, for another season of brilliant images and for continuing to tell the story of our sport through your lens. Next time you spot Lisa on the beach with her camera, give her a wave 👋 there’s a good chance she’s about to capture something you’ll want to remember.

YOU HAD TO BE THERE. 🎥
Two club captains. One quarter-final. Clifton 4th Beach, Nov 2025.

Tanner Gorille (Clifton) and Jordan Minter (False Bay) went stride for stride in one of the closest finishes of the day. Tanner edged the line in the quarter-final, but the story wasn’t over. Jordan fought through the remaining rounds to finish fourth overall in the final. 🔥

Rivalries like this are what make beach sprints sooooo good to watch.

You had to be there.
