.
@shafakelif is undoubtedly responsible for my love affair with Turkey. Ever since I read her words, I have been hooked. Like a desperate lover, waiting for the day she’ll finally meet the love she yearns for.

.
Besides the beautiful Turkey that I’ve read of, Shafak’s work has also taken me on heartbreaking journeys depicting how brutal life for women in Turkey continues to be. How the system fails to protect their own. And how, voices MUST be raised against such inhumanity.

.
This B&W challenge that has been making the rounds has stemmed from such brutality.

.
It is an everyday norm for Turkish people to wake up to B&W pictures of a woman murdered. It’s all over their social media feeds, print media, and television screens.

.
And here’s the worst part: “COVID19 quarantines have led Turkish women into their bloodiest year on record” @auturkishculturalclub

.
And this challenge began as a way to show solidarity with the beautiful souls lost through gender based violence. To shine light on the VERY real fact that tomorrow it can be my picture, in B&W, on your feed. For all the wrong reasons. For all the heartbreaking reasons.

.
We should all take every chance to uplift each other. But, as @sharifaeasmin beautifully put, ‘we also need to focus on women who are the most vulnerable.’

.
If you have gone ahead with the challenge, please edit your caption and mention the Turkish women who need our help, NOW.

.
Let’s take care of each other, but most importantly, let’s reach out to the women who need us the most right now.

.
Please check out @auturkishculturalclub for ways you can help.

.
Let’s stay informed and do whatever we can, from where we stand.
