Cartography of Presence
(Aug8- Aug29)

Zahra Jlayer
Curatorial Statement

Cartography of Presence explores the shifting relationship between place, memory, and emotional experience. The work considers how moments continue to inhabit us long after they have passed, and how memory is never fixed, but continually reshaped, adding, fading, and replacing details over time.

Memory rarely remains in focus.

Through a language of softness, fragmentation, and blurred imagery, these photographs move away from documentation and toward recollection. The places depicted are not presented as they once existed, but as they persist within memory: incomplete, atmospheric, and emotionally charged. What is absent becomes as significant as what remains, suggesting that memory is shaped as much by loss and distance as by presence.

At the heart of the work is an intimate experience of migration and displacement. As an Iranian woman whose life has been shaped by movement across places and borders, the artist approaches landscape not simply as geography, but as an emotional terrain—one where personal history, longing, belonging, and absence intersect.

Cartography of Presence invites viewers to consider their own internal maps: the places they have left behind, the moments that continue to shape them, and the memories that have gradually transformed with time.

Ultimately, the work suggests that our relationship to place does not end when we leave it. We carry these places within us, continually redrawn through memory, emotion, and time. We are shaped not only by where we have lived, but by what continues to live within us.

Cartography of Presence
Solo Photography Exhibition
By: Farnaz Farrokhi
.

Farnaz is an Iranian-born multidisciplinary artivist, and researcher whose practice is grounded in lived experience and informed by a transnational life shaped by migration, intercultural exchange, and global engagement. Working across mediums, she examines how political and geographic realities become lived human experience, and how artistic practice can transform personal experience into collective reflection. At the core of her work is an interest in how experiences of real lived experiences, movement, displacement, and cultural transition reshape the ways people perceive themselves, others, and the spaces they inhabit. Her work investigates memory not as an archive of the past, but as a living force that continues to shape perception, belonging, and our experience of place and presence. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including representations by the United Nations Civil Society and its institutional partners in New York and Geneva.
.
We invite you to join us in celebration of her works on August 15th 4-6 pm
Meet the artist in person and enjoy her beautiful art on display

‘I don’t feel safe.’

Saying these few words to myself when I shift into fear has changed my life…

And they can change yours too.

Last week I was on a zoom call on to amplify the voices of female artists. It was run by @lisarussellfilm, @mayaazucena @farnazfarokhi and @artdomproject.

As I listened, in awe, to their wisdom and lived experience it made me think about how I use my own artistic voice.

How do I advocate for myself to be seen and heard?
What is it I am here to say?
How do I ensure I say it even when I feel unsafe?

So much of what they shared resonated with me. It has sparked me into action.

@farnazfarokhi said ‘every human that gets awareness creates potential for someone else to not suffer.’ She went on to say ‘you have to be willing to pay the price for using your voice. When people feel power to change their story the narrative changes.’

I have always seen my work with mothers and families as helping them to change their narrative. To really sit with the story they are telling themselves and to question how it serves them. And then to speak up and out for themselves and others.

When we are unaware of the stories we tell ourselves we live in a reactive state. We feel unsafe but we don’t admit it.

Instead we fight.
We flee.
We freeze.
We fawn.

In the past few weeks I have understood my own unsafe blueprint in a new way. Whilst I am not in physical or psychological danger as many women around the world my fear has felt very real at times. By owning when I feel unsafe I have been able to listen and tend to my own needs. I have the tools to recalibrate back to feeling safe and return to acting through the resonance of love.

These incredible women activated something in me. If they can risk lives at times to help women use art for social change then I, with all my privilege, need to up my game. And I am calling on those changemaker mothers to join me.

@mayaazucena closed the call saying ‘the hugest activation is within your own household.’

My new live programme - The Matriarch - does exactly that. It is for mothers ready to rise, lead and activate their own creative energy to create a better future.
