Congratulations to Fiona Millais – Surrey Artist of the Year 2026!

What a wonderful evening celebrating Surrey's remarkable artistic talent at New Ashgate Gallery!

We are absolutely delighted for Fiona Millais, our Surrey Artist of the Year 2026! A fantastic achievement and a wonderful recognition of her work. Warm congratulations also to our two runners-up, Kate Alger and Jane Silk, whose outstanding work made this such a closely contested award.

The exhibition attracted an impressive 626 gallery votes. The public vote determined our three finalists, from whom the judging panel selected Fiona as the overall winner. With such exceptional talent, it was no easy decision!

A big congratulations also to Artan Jahaj, winner of the separate online Readers' Choice Award, presented by Richard Nye on behalf of Sheengate Publishing and Guildford, Farnham, Woking & Surrey Downs Magazines. Wonderful to see his work receive such enthusiastic public recognition!

Many thanks to our judges, Councillor Graham White, Mayor of Farnham, Pippa Hufton, Farnham Craft Town Co-ordinator, and Cara Flowers, Managing and Artistic Director of DAiSY. We are very grateful for their time, expertise and thoughtful consideration in making such a difficult decision.

Special thanks to our long-standing partners Surrey Artists Open Studios (SAOS), with whom we have proudly delivered the award since 2009, and the Patricia Baines Trust, whose generous support makes the award possible. We also thank DAiSY, our media partners Sheengate Publishing, and Katherine at The Bulb Shed for the beautiful flowers.

And finally, a huge congratulations to all 17 shortlisted artists! It has been a real pleasure to share your work with our visitors and see the enthusiasm it has inspired. Each of you has contributed to making this exhibition so special, and we are proud to celebrate your achievements.

There's still time to enjoy the exhibition! Visit us before 7 November 2026. Entry is free, and everyone is welcome.

Have you spotted the new installation in the Lion and Lamb Yard? 🌿

Created using regenerative and natural materials, ‘Fleeting’ by Hermione Thomson comprises of a series of naturally dyed textile panels, screen printed with abstracted imagery inspired by the shadows and forms of foliage found in and around Farnham.

📍 See it throughout October in Lion and Lamb Yard.

Farnham Craft Month is kindly sponsored by the Lion and Lamb Yard alongside Make it Farnham (Farnham BID) and Frensham Heights.

When the rain is lashing down and the wind is howling, step inside and discover Surrey’s thriving cultural scene. 🎭🎨🎶

Catch a play, lose yourself in live music, explore an exhibition or try your hand at something new in a creative workshop. ✨️

Surrey’s theatres, galleries and arts centres have plenty happening throughout the year, with good reasons to venture out even when the weather is doing its worst. ☔️

Did you know? The theme for @surreydayuk 2027, on Saturday May 8, is Inspirational Surrey - celebrating the county’s remarkable influence on generations of artists, writers, musicians and creative minds. 💚

Find out what’s on and plan a culture-filled day out at visitsurrey.com 🥰

It’s all in the details…

Farnham is full of interesting architectural features that can easily go unnoticed.

This sketch captures an ornate brickwork alcove and decorative urn, brought to life with fine ink detailing and subtle washes of colour.

A reminder to look up and appreciate the little details that give our town its character.

Have you spotted this feature in Farnham?

I’ll also be exhibiting my collection of Farnham sketches again this weekend at the Brightwells Craft Market with @farnhamcreativesnetwork

One week to go until Farnham Lantern Festival 2026 🍂✨

🌙 From 5pm in Gostrey Meadow there will be live music from country and folk band Violet Faultline! Lantern holders are to arrive by 6pm, ready for the procession to St Andrew’s Church at 6.30pm.

📍 The procession will travel along Union Road, up South Street to The Borough, down into Downing Street and along Upper Church Lane, finishing at St Andrew’s Church.

🗺️ To accommodate the parade, a temporary road closure will be in place on Thursday 29th October from 6pm until 7pm so anybody travelling into Farnham by car should allow extra time for their journey.

We can’t wait to see all your wonderful creations ✨

Thank you to our Craft Month principal sponsors Make it Farnham (Farnham BID) and Lion and Lamb Yard and silver sponsor Frensham Heights 🌟

Let me tell you about Tuesday night in Farnham. 🥰

It was a room of people, some came together, some came on their own.
It was one big sheet of paper, some autumnal inspiration but absolutely no plan.

👉Nobody needed it to be “good”.
👉Nobody was making anything to sell or for a particular purpose.

🎨We just painted, chatted and let it get messy.🥂

Then we cut the painting up! ✂️
It became the covers a handmade sketchbook, notebook and even pieces of abstract art. 🖼️

Everyone went home with a piece of something we all made together.

That’s Creative Wilding™. 🍂🍃
Making something because you want to, not because it has to have a purpose to warrant doing it.

❓When did you last make something with no plan?
Switched off from the to-do list, or spend your evening doing something other than sat scrolling or watching TV.

📣 I’m planning more evenings like this, exploring painting, drawing, paper craft for the lead up to Christmas and into 2027

Interested in joining my next event?

🗣️Comment CREATE and I’ll message you first when there are some details to share.

Are you a venue that would love to host an evening like this? DM let’s chat!

Thank you to everyone who came, and to @farnhamcrafttown , @farnhamcreativesnetwork for organising October Craft Month and @brightwells_farnham for the use of the Creative Space

Do tag us in your photos of your finished lanterns - we’d love to see them - and hopefully see you in at the lantern procession!

We're delighted to introduce the ‘Farnham Fleet’: a colourful collection of boats created by the @farnhammakersinspire artists in collaboration with exhibition visitors, visitors to the @farnhamcrafttown launch event, and @farnhamcreativesnetwork. The collection celebrates Farnham’s rich making history and its place along the Shipwrights Way.

Paper artist @thisisnathanward designed the boats, with paper generously supplied and sponsored by UK-based paper mill @jamescropperpaper. To kick off October Craft Month, @farnhammakersinspire and the makers welcomed lots of little ones and creative souls to our events, where they illustrated a sail and personalised their own boat. Of the 200 boats created, many have gone home as special keepsakes, while the rest are now on display among the beams in the @thefarnhampottery exhibition space, where they’ll remain for the week.

This project is a heartfelt celebration of Farnham’s creative spirit and community, with each boat reflecting a contributor’s unique journey. A special thank you to the @farnhammakersinspire team listed below for bringing this wonderful project to life and supporting it along the way.

Katharine from @coldashpress letterpress printed the beautiful Makers Inspire sails for the bigger boats!
