Today, Mr Riley and Miss D were invited to the Chancellery at Monash University to be part of a video celebrating our ‘Learning with the Land with Respect’ project, which has been nominated by the Faculty of Education for a Vice-Chancellor’s Award!🥹🌏

It was such a privilege to share the story of this project alongside MUMA, Faculty of Education partners, and Indigenous artists Aunty Karen and Nikki, who have generously led and shared their cultural knowledge throughout this work.

We are so proud to see this project recognised and to celebrate the wonderful collaboration, learning and connections that have made it possible. 💚

A huge thank you to Melissa, Geraldine and Pricilla for this incredible opportunity. 🍃🦜

Acknowledging artwork: “Why Don’t Whitefellas Like Trees?” created by the First Nations art collective Pitcha Makin Fellas, inspired by the ongoing fight to protect sacred and ancient trees on Country from destruction.

Our Grade 6 students had an amazing day at Monash University (Peninsula Campus) today! 🎓✨

After exploring the campus and looking at the unique bird bath sculptures, our young artists designed their very own custom skateboards. 🛹🎨

Students picked an animal and used creative lines and patterns to show how that animal moves or sounds. We are so proud of the beautiful work they created!

A huge thank you to the Monash University Faculty of Education for giving our students such a wonderful opportunity to learn and create. 🐦🪶🐦‍⬛

Today, 2B were invited to take part in an exciting Art Reach session at Monash Peninsula Campus. During the session, students explored Artful ways to learn with the land.
Students engaged with a new sculpture on campus, entitled …The Birds 🦅

Students created their own art inspired by our theme: Artful learning with the land. Students worked with and alongside Monash pre-service teachers and their lecturer in and around the natural surrounds of the studio space at Monash Peninsula.

Thank you to all who joined us for the launch of the 2025 Gertrude Edition: When daylight fades and night invades by Mia Boe. The generosity of Gertrude’s community of supporters made this event an unprecedented success, and a fitting celebration at the end of Gertrude’s 40-year anniversary programming.⁠
⁠
Over the past five years, Mia Boe has garnered momentous critical attention for her painting-based practice. Her work engages with perceptions of justice, as well as the terrains of landscape and imagination. In consecutive bodies of work, Boe has positioned key figures as central, or as counterpoints, to the context of inheritance and disinheritance. From seminal Murri poet, activist and artist, Lionel Fogarty, to colonial art historical figures such as Russell Drysdale and Sidney Nolan, Boe positions relational knowledges and political histories within the context of a First Nations worldview.⁠
⁠
For the 2025 Gertrude Edition, When daylight fades and night invades, Boe has worked with Negative Press to produce her first works using the process of screen printing. The three editions represent the arc of a day, from day, to dusk to night, to convey the passing of time, and phases of presence. Within these temporally shifting landscapes, Boe depicts three successive chapters: The shadow, The portal and The return. The shadow presents a sinewy figure reuniting with its imprint on Country, a place from which it has been extricated and distanced; The portal depicts the connection of body and place; and The return suggests a process of rejuvenation and transformation.⁠

Registrations are open for our visual arts teacher professional development opportunity Contemporary Art on the Road (CAOTR).

In 2024 CAOTR will comprise six workshops presented in conjunction with educators from four regional galleries: Horsham Regional Art Gallery, Castlemaine Art Museum, Bendigo Art Gallery and Shepparton Art Museum. The program will also be presented at Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) and Gertrude Contemporary.

The first part of the program consists of formal presentations by educators from Gertrude, Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and host organisations. The second component of the program will be led by Gertrude Studio Artists: Nathan Beard and Georgia Morgan.

The program will tour regional and metropolitan organisations from Tuesday 19 November until Friday 29 November of this year.

Contemporary Art on the Road is an initiative developed by Gertrude Contemporary in partnership with Monash University Museum of Art and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

Contemporary Art on the Road is funded by the Department of Education and Training through the Strategic Partnerships Program (SPP).
