Excited about this new partnership between Fathers’ UpLift and the Office of Returning Citizens!

Beginning September 21, we’re bringing our Managing Emotions group into the community—a free 8-session experience designed to help participants better understand their emotions, build practical tools, and strengthen emotional wellness.

I love partnerships like this because they allow us to meet people where they are and remove barriers to support.

Grateful to the Office of Returning Citizens for opening the door to this collaboration. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together!

Last week, we walked together. 💙💛

We were honored to welcome Secretary Dr. Kiame Mahaniah and the Department of Mental Health (DMH) Assistant Commissioner Dr. Funmi Aguocha to Fathers’ UpLift.

We walked our Dorchester neighborhood, shared breakfast, and listened to our team, students, and a father.

We’re grateful for our growing partnership with DMH + OBHPP and what lies ahead for fathers and families.

Government has reach and resources.
Community has relationships, proximity, and trust.
We need both.

Walking together.

The next few months will have me on the move.
One thing I have learned over the years is that the work of supporting fathers cannot be confined to one city, one organization, or one room. The conversations have to travel.

From New Orleans to New York, Washington, D.C. to Boston, Chicago to Indianapolis, and Cincinnati, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be in community with people who are thinking deeply about fatherhood, families, mental health, education, technology, and what it means to truly show up for the people we serve.

Some of these rooms will look very different from one another. But I’m carrying the same question with me into each one:

How do we create communities where fathers have what they need to be present, healthy, connected, and supported?

That question has guided much of my life's work, and I remain grateful that I get to keep asking it—and, more importantly, listening to what fathers, families, students, practitioners, and communities have to say in response.

If our paths cross in one of these cities, please come say hello. I would love to connect.

With gratitude,

~ Charles

Several years ago, as an Obama Fellow, I had the opportunity to ask President Obama a question that has stayed with me ever since:

"What would you say to fathers who are worried about their families and their livelihood during difficult times?"

His response reinforced something I continue to believe today: fathers do not need judgment—they need support, opportunity, and hope.

That lesson helped shape how Samantha and I think about strengthening families through Fathers' UpLift. It continues to influence how we support fathers who are working through barriers while striving to remain present in their children's lives.

As we celebrate Father's Day and reflect on the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, I'm reminded that a single conversation can shape years of work.

To every father doing his best to show up for his children: we see you, we appreciate you, and we're rooting for you.

I'm also honored to share our 2025 Annual Report, which reflects the stories, impact, and hope that continue to guide our mission.

I’m excited to share that on December 11, I’ll be guest lecturing at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, thanks to an invitation from Dr. Elizabeth Janiak.

Dr. Janiak’s course examines critical issues including family separation as a tool of state control, racial inequities in child welfare, and the economic pressures surrounding “voluntary” adoptions.

This year, I’ve been invited to contribute a perspective rooted in positive intervention and family reunification — sharing lessons from our work at @fathersuplift , where we help fathers and families overcome systemic barriers to reconnect and heal.

I look forward to engaging with future public health leaders who are ready to challenge harmful systems and build pathways that keep families together.
