She promised her mother a private jet by fifty. Instead she quit a safe accounting job in Malaysia, boarded a plane to London with no job waiting, and spent her first week there staring at rattling windows wondering what she’d done.

Nineteen years later, Aarathi Arumugam is a mother of two in Singapore, a country she had to build a life in from scratch. Her daughter came after a first round of IVF. Years later, trying for a second child, she went through six or seven more rounds and lost a set of twins at 12 weeks. Her son came from a phone call on Valentine’s Day, after months of nothing, after she’d already packed away all the baby clothes to give away.

She talks about walking away from the expat circles that were supposed to make Singapore easier, and finding her people instead through community work with AWARE, work she didn’t plan on but couldn’t walk away from once she started.

This episode:
👉 The one round of IVF that produced an unheard-of number of eggs, timed to the week of her 35th birthday
👉 Why she gave up on the “expat bubble” and went looking for community instead
👉 The twins she lost at 12 weeks during her second round of IVF, and what nobody tells you about how it changes your body and your marriage
👉 Why she only understood her husband’s grief years after it happened
👉 The phone call that led to her son, and the Valentine’s Day it finally came through
👉 The question about adoption she wishes people would stop asking, and the one they never do
👉 What Every Child SG is doing to change how adults speak to kids

💬 Comment AARATHI and we’ll send you the episode.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, YALL!! I don’t think I’ve ever had a core memory around Halloween but that’s all about changed after this session with @singsongsocialclub at the @singaporeoceanarium! Singing together is always magic, but getting dressed up for the night to sing Thriller specifically? Gah! Dream come true!

Thanks for capturing the night @nikvoon @tunaunga @thelioncityboy! ❤️

Faz (@fazgaffa) makes dressing easy — the best outfits always are.

She wears: Modern Asymmetric Linen Blouse with Modern Wrap Linen Trousers, Galleria Broderie Bubble Blouse with Studio Ramie Balloon Trousers, and the Midtown Linen Bias Dress layered with the Midtown Short-Sleeve Blazer.

Why my office is cooler than yours 👻🎃💀
@singsongsocialclub: Halloween Edition was held at @singaporeoceanarium for the very first time — right in Ancient Waters, our prehistoric zone filled with life-sized ancient sea creatures, fossils, and real-life survivors of the deep. The vibes? Spooky perfection.

What a night!!! We missed you, @eleventhour @sputniksqueaks!

Eadie turns 1.5 years old today, which means it’s been half a year since we managed this epic group shot with all of the kids in tow, except OF COURSE the birthday girl isn’t looking at the camera! Thanks for capturing this, @jaredrezel.eth ! But next time can you also be in the shot??

2 - I cleverly gave the cake delivery peeps the wrong address so it got sent to Seletar instead of East, and by the time it finally got to the party the red lettering on it had melted so we had a creepy, bleeding, Halloween-esque cake instead. 🥲

3 & 4 - The show must go on! Creepy cake or not!

5 - 💖🌈🫶🏽

6 - We love you, Godma @gggennnn!

7 & 8 - Eadie started walking just a few days before her 1st bday but she was still wibbly-wobbling all over the place

9 - Picnic vibes strong thanks to awesome mats I found on Shopee 💛

10 - Looking at you is still such a pinch-me moment because we never thought I’d have baby no. 3 due to all sorts of health reasons. We are so lucky to have you in our lives and you are the perfect, chubby, not-so-little cherry on top of this wonderful family sundae!! 🍒🍨

Movement, shaped by the women who raised us 🫂📼

We asked your VAURA trainers to share a little about the mother figures in their lives. The ones who showed up, stood strong, and sparked something that never left.✨

Happy Mother’s Day to the VAURA community. To every mother, mother figure, and those who hold that kind of love. We see you. We celebrate you. 🌸

One year ago, we brought the Vaura Pilates experience to Joo Chiat, and what a transformative journey it’s been.✨

From day one, my mission has always been to create a space where every body can thrive. Watching this community flourish over the past 12 months has been nothing short of incredible! 🤩

To all our wonderful members, instructors, front of house & supporters - THANK YOU! 💜🙏🏼

Did you know that at the beginning of every class we always have a dance warm up! It’s a way for everyone to feel free and connected with themselves. Oh and of course, have fun!

Our second belief is Dream, symbolised by the Yellow circle. After all, everything we have done today started from a dream. It is about embracing the journey of possibilities - whether it's pursuing a new passion or overcoming a tough moment. Dare to dream little ones! @fazgaffa
