North Branch Nature Center is celebrating @Birdability Week with a day of accessible birding on Saturday, October 24! Birdability Week (October 19 - 25) is a celebration of birders with disabilities and other health concerns, and an opportunity to share resources and ideas to help the birding community become accessible, inclusive, and welcoming to everybody.

The event at NBNC will include guided bird outings along the Universal Access Trail and meadow trail, and a guided stationary bird watch (a little “Big Sit”). Inside the Nature Center building, check out the bird feeders and learn more about NBNC, @VermontLandTrust, Birdability, @fbc.nvt, and other organizations providing accessible outings and trails and advocating for inclusive birding. Binoculars will also be available for birdwatching, and snacks and cider will be available thanks to a donation by Hunger Mountain Co-op!

♿Accessibility info: The NBNC library will be reserved as a quiet space. Masking is welcomed and extra masks will be available at the door. There will be additional accessible parking spaces for this event. ASL interpretation for bird walks and the Big Sit provided by @vancroiis and donated by @vtcil. Please let us know if you have any accessibility needs we can help accommodate!

After doing some birding with an excellent group hosted by @fbc.nvt and @queerbirders.btv at @vtqueercrafts today, I stopped by Thurmond W Dix Reservoir in Orange and happened to see two Wilson’s Snipe foraging right near the bridge! Two Solitary Sandpipers here too. Thanks to all for a fun morning bird walk!

stone sheep, birds on a wire (for the most part), obsessing over bats, physical media, living where ketchup is considered to be spicy, being invited to see how the orchard works, listening to the thunder roll, violence being the only answer, and oh(kay), Canada & Vermont - I see you.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to bird lately. Fortunately, I have a wire that brings all the birds to the yard. Also, the commitment to regression is apparent, ethical breeding doesn't exist, and we should Make Kid's Movies Sad Again. Them children need to learn.

so much joy in yesterday, even though there weren't many birds. what a surprising turnout! we saw a turkey vulture, crows, a scarlet tanager heard an angry blue jay, and a mystery nut hatch. Thank you to all the volunteers, organizers, and community members who show to make the Queer Arts Festival happen 💓

Our resident celebrity, the Glossy Ibis, was spotted trailing after a Mallard and two fledglings. I was lucky enough to see a Solitary Sandpiper also sneaking around the mud flats (thanks to K for pointing it out!). But best of all, I happened to run into a couple of birders from @fbc.nvt! Earlier that afternoon, I ran into a local birder who helpfully pointed out the Ibis when I’d assumed it was totally out of view. The community that has gathered around this unexpected youngster is just awesome.

Birders! Educators! Queers!

Spring migration is upon us. Who’s seen a kinglet this week? Whose dog flushed a flat of juncos on a walk today? Who has seen a brown creeper creeping slyly up a tree trunk today? Who wants to see a FOY warbler while in the company of awesome humans? Or 8 different species of sparrows?

Join @teachoutvermont and @fbc.nvt next Thursday 4/25/24 10am for all of these things. And more. Plus. Etc. bonus.

-binoculars
-camera
-warm clothes

-the Merlin app to ID bird calls by sound while we are birding
-any level of knowledge about birds and birding
