Last night's Cuba solidarity event in London brought undeniable power to the emergency medical fundraiser in Lewisham. Hosted at the Fox & Firkin, the packed room delivered a masterclass in how working-class communities fuse political education, cultural resistance, and critical fundraising to actively dismantle the US blockade.

Cuban academic and activist Míriam Palacios anchored the evening by marking the 65th anniversary of the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution and the historic victory at Playa Girón. Building on that foundation, Carlos Rafael Rodriguez, First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy, outlined the island's ongoing history of struggle. He addressed the severe, contemporary dangers posed by Washington's maximum pressure policies, including specific threats from Donald Trump, while highlighting Cuba's enduring counter-narrative: defending humanity through international medical collaborations, global educators, and student training programs.

This political clarity was amplified by South London's vibrant cultural solidarity. With live, electric performances from Danger Goat, Orquesta Estelar, and the Viva Colombia UK Dancers, the night proved that grassroots organizing remains the ultimate antidote to imperial isolation.

Yesterday, Ambassador Ismara Vargas Walter addressed the Morning Star Conference, detailing the US blockade and Cuba's escalating energy crisis. Joining the "Another world is possible" panel at Hamilton House alongside trade unionists, the Ambassador laid out the brutal reality of economic warfare.

Washington’s January 29 energy boycott explicitly aims to choke our grid. Consequently, nationwide blackouts force hospitals to ration power, leaving thousands of patients awaiting critical procedures. This illegal siege has cost the Cuban economy over 150 billion dollars.

Despite this strangulation, Cuba maintains a cradle-to-university free education system and the highest global ratio of 9 doctors per 1,000 people. Healthcare remains an inalienable right, not a commodity.

British workers have historically stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Cuba, and that internationalism will continue.

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the arson that destroyed my family’s home of over 30 years. On Saturday 14th May, 2022, one man’s actions changed our lives forever.
