Marshall Ganz, Senior Lecturer in Leadership, Organizing and Civil Society at the @harvardkennedyschool, has spent his career exploring how narratives move people to action and build collective power. As an ambassador for the @fdn4socialconnection I kept hearing about social prescribing initiatives growing state by state. I kept wondering — what about Ohio? So I looked. Found a newer initiative already growing. There was a meeting the following week. I showed up. 🌿 I introduced myself to @katestahgram , told her I had an odd eclectic skillset that might be helpful in some strange way, and asked if I could be of service to the @ohiosocialprescribing collaborative. This @letstalkbrainhealthpodcast conversation from the @virtualbrainhealthcenter is one small touchpoint of what has grown from that. Here is why this work speaks to my heart and brain. ❤️ + 🧠 As a sociologist, gerontologist, and doctor of behavioral health — social prescribing touches every corner of my training. And then some. We deliberately plan roads, schools, and public spaces because infrastructure shapes how people live. I believe relationships and civic trust should be approached with the same intention. I call this Social Connection Architecture: the deliberate design of environments that make meaningful relationships, belonging, and trust more possible. Our neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, civic institutions, and social media platforms can either bring people together or quietly separate them. Personalization tools, for example, can sort people into narrower and narrower feeds without us fully realizing it. These outcomes were shaped by design choices—which means they can be changed through better ones. “If architecture is something we build, it can certainly be something we rebuild. 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙢, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚. We often treat political and cultural divides as something we can fix with better facts, sharper arguments, or more persuasive messaging. But research highlighted at the GILC Global Connection Forum points to a deeper issue: Polarization is a symptom, not the disease. It grows out of inequality, injustice, resource competition, and eroded trust in institutions and in each other. Addressing political or cultural division without confronting these underlying conditions leaves the real drivers untouched. As co-founder of GILC, I have spent years focused on a simple but often overlooked idea: trust does not move on facts alone. It moves on relationships. GILC's Origin Story: From one Zoom call to a network spanning nearly 25 countries. To close Week 1 of our four-week series, we are looking at how GILC grew and the values that continue to guide its work. What began as a conversation between two organizations in Australia and the United States expanded to include partners across the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Denmark, Finland, and beyond. The network grew around a shared belief: organizations addressing loneliness should be able to exchange lessons across research, policy, and advocacy instead of starting from scratch. Five years later, GILC remains grounded in the kind of partnership that brought it to life: genuine, reciprocal, and built on trust.
