*Day 8*
📍Kinlochleven-Fort William

By this time, my body started to welcome the routine of wake up, eat, walk, eat, sleep. The forced minimalism required of me a raw state of existence. Loch Lomond’s knobby paths demanded a presence of mind and the infinite Highlands commanded respect, humbling us tiny trail snails. On the West Highland Way, the only way to show up for the day is authentically. There is no space for ego, the future, or the past.

I think this stripped down living is partially what makes the relationships made on the trail so special. We all showed up as the most true version of ourselves.

Day 8 is a long day, as it should be. I’m grateful for the long last day, because when I did finally arrive in Fort William, my feet were tired and I was ready to hang up my boots.

The final steps of the trail were pretty magical- I was walking with Josh and Barry and greeting us at the sore feet statue were our American trailmates. As life would have it.

At a nearby pub I shared a celebratory round of drinks with my beloved trailmates. Feelings of joy, camaraderie, and accomplishment filled my heart. This last photo is imperfect but it will forever hold a special place in my heart.

As you set off for your next adventure, i hope you are inspired to preserve and protect the planet as much as you enjoy its many benefits.

Thank you all for allowing me the self indulgence to share my West Highland Way journey.
I’d especially like to thank those of you who have donated to the fundraiser. The @westhighlandwayofficial will use these funds to repair and maintain this magnificent trail for the many walkers to come.

*Day 2*
📍Drymen-Balmaha-Rowardenan

In October, the sun rises around 07:30 so i could allow myself to a luxurious sleep in. My feet and body felt rested and ready to take on Conic hill!

After a large breakfast at @skooshdrymen, I ordered a sandwich + pastry to go and i hit the trail.

I was blessed with a dry morning however as i approached Conic Hill, the weather took a turn. Blind with excitement, i naively thought the rain would lighten and i decided my rain pants would be unnecessary. This is the day i learned what Scottish rain was 🌧️

Crossing paths with fellow American walker, Rob, he summarized the slog up Conic Hill best: It was like walking with bathtubs for shoes🛁 i met the rest of his crew and we took a wet selfie to commemorate our bravery!

At the bottom of the hill, I wrung out my socks, slipped my feet back into my wet boots and lunched with the my new trailmates in Balmaha at @oaktreeinn . The food was wonderful and the service very welcoming of soggy walkers. I picked up some sweet treats in Balmaha and i continued along the misty shores of Loch Lomond.

Eventually i made it to Lochan Maoil Dhuinne. A forested area on the shore near Rowardenan where i would pitch camp and have my first wild camp. I dined on the chicken coronation sandwich from Skoosh and for dessert treated myself to dried apricots and a swig of the sample of whisky from yesterday’s tour. A hiker’s delight!

Please note, depending on the time of the year, there are areas around Loch Lomond where it is prohibited to camp. Please check before going.

Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who taught our girls how to be kind and strong, thoughtful and self-effacing, think critically but be nonjudgmental, independent and value community, fun and silly, and so much more.
She’s great at a million things, but really, really, really good at being a mom.
