Join us on Sunday 30th October for Part 2 of The Chimera Plantarium Weekend with Chiara Dellerba In the morning, join @dellerbachiara for a collective sensory mapping walk, exploring alternative relationships with plants, facilitating structures of care and revealing our co-dependencies with other organisms. Use drawing and design tools to map local spaces and imagine different possible uses in the form of a new cartographic manifesto. In the afternoon, mix bark, herbs and plants to make new recipes for perfumes of the neighbourhood, evoking memories of experiences and emotions associated with events and places. Can we create alternative narratives of public spaces through smell? Click the link in bio to join for all or part of the day, with further activities across the entire weekend. #fermynwoodscontemporaryart #workshop

Our Weekly Alternative Provision with Students from The CE Academy Garry Smiler led the workshop this week, enthusing students with his wealth of knowledge on construction and upcycling. The students were instantly curious about Smiler’s campervan, uniquely spray painted and kitted out using pallet wood. This led nicely into the workshop, dismantling pallets to create planters. The planters utilised waste from Fermynwoods Contemporary Art’s exhibition “Triple harvest”. Soil that was sourced from the local area and contaminated with plastic previously formed Kaitlin Ferguson’s exhibition “Overburden” but was repurposed as drainage in the planters, with large plastic items removed and recycled. One student had requested homemade pizza and Rollo the dog to attend, as it was the last day before half term. Given his work ethic and attitude, his wishes were granted to which he remarked “It’s the best day ever, woodwork, a dog and homemade pizza”. Once the planters were complete Smiler led a walk into the woods to explore the Tipi he had made from branches the night before, this was further built upon and furnished with a handmade bench. We would like to thank Jack Page for stepping on short notice to support the workshops, providing delicious lunches and creating the much loved “Pizza station”. #UnlockPotential @northantscep @garrysmiler

Our Weekly Alternative Provision with Students from The CE Academy The workshop this week was led by Artist Sam Francis Read. Sam captured the student’s imagination, entwining horror with nature by exploring typeface, symmetrical patterns and sculpture. He introduced students to musician’s who use an almost illegible branch-like font as logo’s and challenged them to create their own, exploring the woods for inspiration and finding vein-like branches to photograph. Sam then taught the students how to edit the images in photoshop, turning them black and white and adding effects, such as mirroring. Students used the images as inspiration for font and went on to draw tree-like lettering on folded carbon paper to create a symmetrical print. They then went on to experiment with ink, blowing it with a straw and making stamps using dried stems and leaves, then folding the paper to create a mirror image. The latter part of the workshop focused on sculpture. 'Blair Witch' style totems were created using twigs, string and elastic bands. The compilation of work was briefly installed in the cottage, giving students the opportunity to take pictures of their art, whilst playing with shadows to create a haunted atmosphere. To conclude the session, the students exhibited their totems in Fermyn woods. They chose to install them in a clearing in the woods which contained shelters that the public can rent to stay overnight - playing on the idea of a haunted forest. They believed leaving them at this location could create a feeling of both wonder and unease to those who dare say the night…. #UnlockPotential @northantscep @samfrancisread

Our Weekly Alternative Provision with Students from The CE Academy This week's workshop was led by photographer Andy Eathorne. Students began working with Andy to create a giant pinhole camera in a bedroom in our cottage in Fermyn Woods to help grasp photography concepts by “being inside” the camera. They transformed the bedroom into a camera obscura by taping up a window facing the sun, leaving just a small hole. This allowed an image of the trees and telegraph poles around the cottage to be projected (upside down) on the walls. Students then experimented on a smaller scale using empty drinks cans to create cameras and compared the images to those taken using an Ilford Obscura Pinhole Camera, a professionally manufactured camera with an exposure calculator. Different exposure times were tested to gain an understanding of ISO and aperture settings. Negative photo paper was held in front of the pin hole and then developed in the dark room. The negatives were transformed to positives in different ways - digitally by using a mobile app and manually by placing photo paper under the negative and exposing it to light. @andy_eathorne_photography @northantscep #UnlockPotential

Our Weekly Alternative Provision with Students from The CE Academy This week's workshop led by Education Coordinator Stuart Moore explored movement. Keen to explore the blue sky which was revealed when the fog lifted from the woods, students built a tethered aeroplane by attaching a motor and propeller to a framework made of wooden dowels, experimenting to find the best shape and position for the wings and tail to make it fly. Setting their sights higher the next task was to create a rocket, applying the knowledge and principles learnt from the aeroplane. A 3D printed nose cone and fins were added to a roll of card, formed around the “engine” which worked on similar principles to a firework but ignited by electronic fuses. The rocket was successfully launched and landed (mostly) intact. Students then experimented with other moving technology, to create kinetic art sculptures from a self-balancing Arduino robot, magnetic levitating gyroscopes and a perpetual rollercoaster marble run. @northantscep #UnlockPotential

✊🏼HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY ✊🏼 In celebration of #mayday #aroletoplay is screening today in partnership with #NewhamTradesCouncil www.newhamtradescouncil.org + on 8th May as part of the @kurzfilmoberhausen #filmfestival @argos_arts The film was made as part of http://workprojects.org.uk with @animateprojectsuk and partnering with @junctionartsuk @vividprojectsuk @derbyquad + @fermynwoods . a ROLE to PLAY a film by Esther Johnson // 2019 // 17’ // UK https://blanchepictures.com/a-role-to-play a ROLE to PLAY brings together a range of contributors who live in Bolsover, one of the most deprived towns in the middle of England, including workers at the Freedom Community Project @freedomproj and former MP Dennis Skinner, to tell their stories of the impact of #economicchanges brought from post-industrialisation. . //Film Participants// Some things are in you from the start aren't they? I’ve always had a love of books. They’re old friends. And I loved reading and wanted to teach kids to read. I met Bernard at the library. We were friends for two years before we went to a Communist dance in Bingley. I mean, I’m a raving Socialist but the Communists were rubbish dancers. However, the food was good. — Jeanette Haigh @bolsoverreadinggroup Jobs have come and gone. I’ve just got on with it. One job, I had to sort trays out of millions of screws. All day just doing that. That was the most boring job. But the hardest thing is getting the job in the first place. — Stephen Cotton 1970. I got elected, and six o’clock the day after I went to work. I didn’t have two ha’pennies to rub together. I hadn’t got a bank account. I hadn’t got a car. I went to work because I didn’t know when I was going to get paid in Parliament. Nobody sent me a letter saying turn up on such and such a day. I just had to keep looking in the papers to see when swearing in started. 🗣 Appel a création art-sport 🇬🇧 Can art and running catalyse artful ways forward for a post-pandemic future? The Running Artfully Network (RAN) is a new international artist-led group that brings communities and experts together to reframe running as an artistic intervention to unpick our time of multiple global crises, and to create a more equitable and creative future. To celebrate its online launch, we’re inviting the submission of proposals for art-inspired running or running-inspired art that outlines new insights into the climate crisis, inequality, the threat of technology, or mental health. You will present your proposals in the form of presentations that last no more than 8 minutes. This could be in the form of a presentation of the documentation of your work, or in the form of a micro-workshop or enactment, online intervention, performance-lecture and so on. The top two selected works will be awarded £250 each from the inaugural RAN Award. One of them will be for a Newcomer (defined as someone with less than three years of practice or research in art, or art using running). We also welcome ‘traditional’ academic papers and other provocations in response to the theme, also within the 8-minute time-limit. Submission Format: Abstract/proposal: <500 words Bio/Artist Statement: <500 words Images and links to previous work may be included Total file size cannot exceed 3 pages A4 PDF and 10MB Email to: veronique.chance@aru.ac.uk Timetable: 31/01/2021: 11:59 GMT Deadline for proposals 07/02/2021: Selection and notification 18/02/2021: Final abstracts 26/02/2021: Running Artfully Network Launch and Celebration, ending with an open discussion on next steps.#artsport #sportart

I've always thought that running and art were great partners... Running to see public art (@thelinelondon @queenelizabetholympicpark and @canarywharflondon are great art runs), running to make art, running away from art sometimes 🤣. I even ran for 3 hours, jumping over an obstacle course of people for an @artangel_ldn R&D once 😬. Now there's a NETWORK for this 🤯! Running artists (or is it Artistic runners? 🤔) have got together to create a happy place for the likes of me. Thank you #kaisyngtan @chanceveronique @mtainio @_elix.ir #jamessteventon #lisastansbie and #bethclayton. Running Artfully Network is officially launching on the 26th of February and they want to celebrate this with an open call for art-inspired running and running-inspired art. Find the link in bio of @fermynwoods for submission guidelines. #opencall #opencallforartists #runrunrun #artisnotcancelled #r3festival #runningculture #launchingsoon #arteveryday #arteverywhere #runningcelebration #runningart #runningartist
