Morocco, one colour at a time. Starting with GREEN. 💚

The fresh mint tucked into a glass of tea. A beautifully weathered door I can’t walk past without photographing. A turban, a djellaba, botttled of locally made wine, green bottle caps on bottles of olive oil, the large apple entering into Midelt, the green roof of Al Qaraouine University or what about a random bag of feed in the Medina of Essaouira that came all the way from… Canada!! And of course the endless landscapes that make you stop and say, “Ah, yes, this is Morocco too.”

I’ve been looking through my photos, and it turns out I have quite the collection of Morocco in green. Once you start noticing a colour, you see it everywhere… in what people wear, what they grow, what they pour, and how they paint their homes.

So this is the beginning of a little series: the colours of Morocco, through my eyes. And apparently, I needed 18 photos to make my case for green. 😉

Which green caught your eye? 🌿

🚨Chefchaouen recommendation: Chourafa Restaurant by Said Bakkali

This is one of 2 restaurants that I always recommend anybody visiting the Blue city to try. 😋

I met the owner, Said, on my very first trip to Morocco in 2015 when he had his first Restaurant Bab Ssour (he still has it - Chourafa is now his second!).

Chourafa is a seafood restaurant and, taking after his first restaurant which has the most delicious Moroccan food (I might even dare to say best restaurant Moroccan food in the whole country), Chourafa has some fantastic seafood dishes!

We started off with fresh goat cheese and plum jelly that was absolutely exquisite. My taste buds burst! ✨

When Said asked if I wanted the avocado salad, which has seafood in it as well, I did not hesitate. 🙃 Of course I do, Said.🥑🦐

The main event was the mixed seafood platter. 🐟🦐🦑 Amazing and fresh - this seafood platter pictured for 2 people was more than enough for 3 of us!

We ended with fresh yoghurt and date sauce and something magical on top that I don’t even know but I had to hold back from licking my bowl clean.

Earlier in the day I had bumped into Said in thr street! He said to come and he’d make some specials things. And he did. It was truly destiny to bring my guests there for lunch today. …✨

If you’re ever in Chefchaouen I highly recommend you to try one or both his restaurants!

💙 The blues of Chefchaouen.

Every corner seems to have its own shade — cobalt, turquoise, powder blue, faded blue, freshly painted blue.

Doors, walls, steps, windows… when you get up close, you start noticing just how many different blues make up Morocco’s famous Blue City.

Definitely a place made for wandering with a camera. 📷💙

Chefchaouen 💙

Blue walls, steep little streets, painted doors, neighbourhood cats, laundry hanging overhead and everyday life unfolding around every corner.

It’s one of those places where the best thing to do is simply wander. No real plan. Just follow the streets and see where they take you.

And yes, there really is this much blue. 💙🇲🇦

Have you ever wondered when you’re looking up at the buildings when you’re walking on the street in a Medina and you see conjoining bit between two houses, and thought “hmm, which house does that belong to?”

OK so it might not be the first thing that you think about 🤣 but when we were walking in the Fes Medina, our guide told us something about this…

Fes tanneries smell so bad. 🤢
But what the artisans do there is absolutely magic ✨

Have you been?

🧳 MOROCCO 101 | The Tanneries of Fes

It’s one of the most photographed views in Fes — but look a little closer and you’ll see that the real story is in the people working down in those vats.

Leather tanning has been part of life in Fes for centuries. The famous Chouara Tannery, dating back to the medieval period, is the largest and best-known of the city’s historic tanneries, where many of the traditional processes are still carried out by hand.

Hides are cleaned, softened, treated and eventually dyed in the stone vats using techniques passed down through generations. Natural materials have traditionally played a big role in the process, including lime, salt and even pigeon droppings during the preparation of the hides, with plant-based dyes and ingredients such as indigo, poppy and henna historically used to create colour.

And then there are the men working among the vats.

Standing ankle or knee-deep, moving hides from one vat to another, working under the Moroccan sun — it gives you a completely different appreciation for that beautiful leather bag, pouf or pair of babouches you see hanging in the shops of the medina.

The tanneries aren’t simply something to photograph from a terrace above. They are a living piece of Fes history — a centuries-old craft that continues right in the middle of a modern city.

This is one of the reasons I always encourage people to slow down when they travel through Morocco. Look beyond the famous view. Watch the hands doing the work. Learn the story behind what you’re seeing.

💙 CHEFCHAOUEN — Morocco’s Blue Pearl

Tucked into the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is one of those places that feels a little bit like you’ve stepped into another world.

Blue-washed walls in every shade imaginable. Narrow lanes winding up and down the hillside. Colourful doors, tiny shops, cats sleeping in patches of sunshine, baskets of fresh bread, mountain views and little cafés where you can sit with a mint tea and simply watch life go by.

Yes, it’s incredibly photogenic — but Chefchaouen is so much more than a pretty blue backdrop.

Slow down and wander away from the busiest streets. Peek into the neighbourhood bakeries. Browse the small artisan shops. Walk up toward the Spanish Mosque for beautiful views over the town. Sit in a quiet square. And give yourself enough time to experience Chefchaouen rather than simply photograph it.

📍 And the good news? Chefchaouen can fit into a Morocco itinerary in several different ways.

I can arrange an excursion from Tangier, or incorporate Chefchaouen into a longer journey beginning in Casablanca or Fes. Even better, we can make it part of a completely curated private Morocco itinerary designed around how you like to travel.

And if you’d rather have everything taken care of and share the experience with a handful of like-minded travellers, Chefchaouen is also included in some of my small-group Morocco journeys. 🇲🇦

Morocco has so many places that stay with you long after you leave.

Chefchaouen is definitely one of them. 💙

🇲🇦 MOROCCO 101: Bargaining in the Souks

Bargaining in Morocco is part of the experience — especially in the souks. And if you’ve never done it before, it can feel a little intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be. 😉

Here are a few tips to help you shop with confidence:

🧿 1. Don’t accept the first price.
In many souks, the opening price is just that — an opening. A little back and forth is expected.

💰 2. Have an idea what you’re willing to pay.
Before you start negotiating, decide what the item is worth to you. That makes it much easier to know when to say yes.

😊 3. Keep it friendly.
Bargaining doesn’t need to be a battle! Smile, joke, chat and enjoy the interaction. A good negotiation can actually be a lot of fun.

🚶‍♀️ 4. Be prepared to walk away.
If the price isn’t right, politely thank them and leave. Sometimes you’ll suddenly hear a better price behind you…and sometimes you won’t. Both are okay.

🛍️ 5. Don’t bargain unless you’re genuinely interested.
Going back and forth for ten minutes and then saying you never wanted the item in the first place isn’t really fair to the seller.

💵 6. Cash can help.
Having smaller Moroccan dirham notes makes paying the agreed price much easier — and sometimes helps with negotiating too.

🤝 7. Remember who you’re bargaining with.
Saving a few dirhams might mean very little to you but considerably more to the artisan or shopkeeper. The goal isn’t to get the absolute lowest price possible — it’s to reach a price that feels fair to both of you.

And one of my biggest tips? Enjoy the interaction.

Have the mint tea. Ask about where something was made. Learn about the craft. Laugh a little. Bargaining in Morocco is as much about the human exchange as it is about the final price.

You might walk away with a beautiful Moroccan treasure — and a great story to go with it. 🇲🇦❤️

The old medinas of Morocco are beautiful… but they’re also layered with centuries of history, traditions, hidden corners, and stories that most visitors walk right past.

That’s why I always recommend exploring with a knowledgeable local guide.

Tarik and all of of the guides my guests use have spent years sharing their city with travellers, and every tour feels less like following a guide and more like walking through Marrakech, Fes, or Casablanca with a local friend who knows every shortcut, every hidden riad, every artisan workshop, and every story behind the walls.

A great guide doesn’t just show you where to go—they help you understand why it matters.

✨ You’ll discover places you would never stumble upon alone.
✨ You’ll learn the history behind what you’re seeing.
✨ You’ll support local artisans and family businesses.
✨ You’ll avoid common tourist traps.
✨ And you’ll leave feeling connected to Morocco, not just like you’ve checked another destination off your list.

It’s the difference between visiting a place… and truly experiencing it.

🇲🇦 That’s the kind of Morocco I love sharing.
