From a lovely Schiaparelli and Surrealist themed Halloween soiree at The Owl & Kitty Cat in Carmel-by-the-Sea, here are some details and expressions I had to start with.

We're in a small town here. Small towns aren't known for being the most fashionable places. Alex, the owner, holds a deep love for old world couture, vintage pieces, and the beautiful things humans create to last and to decorate the aspects of life worth living. If you haven't been to The Owl & Kitty Cat, it's well worth your time.

Thank you to @theowlandkittycat for hosting and @mirthkitchen for the amazing spread

The studio has gotten greener, cozier and a whole lot more alive lately 🌿

It’s really beautiful watching a space change when another person brings their energy, ideas and presence into it. I’m loving having Felicia here and watching what this place is becoming with both of us in it ❤️

Can’t wait to share it with all of you.

Sitting in change.

I’m not always the best with change. Especially when it all comes at once. Trauma taught me to protect what’s familiar, but my love of new things and adventure is always pushing me outside every box I fall into.

This month I chose to end the era of working alone. I’ve done it for so long, I think I forgot I don’t always have to. But this year I needed to cocoon and hibernate while I moved through the depths of grief and a massive death of my old self. I’ve been gingerly reemerging with wet wings, so to speak, but the shift in energy everywhere is palpable.

Change is coming. Change is here. I can embrace it and choose how I shift, or be swept away.

I met an inspiring woman recently who graciously asked me to share what I’ve learned in my work over the last four years. In exchange, she offered a breath of fresh air that I didn’t realize I needed so much.

She’s bright and vibrant, and she challenges me. She keeps me in check, and I know she is going to love this space and this work as much as I do. I think it’s going to change her life as much as it changed mine.

I wrapped up my time working alone in my humble little studio last week with my best friend, receiving my first tattoo there in all these years. It was the most perfect ending to that era for me.

Today, I embraced the new.

We tore down the studio, added a second station, rearranged, redecorated, and goddamn…it feels so fucking good.

And maybe the best part is that all the things I’ve said I wanted to do here, but never had the time or energy for, are finally getting done. Because I’m no longer doing it all alone. I have a partner in crime. A collaborator. Another person invested in making this little place even better.

My sanctuary gets to be someone else’s sanctuary now, too…and I think that’s the part that feels the biggest.

I’m so happy.

Thank you Felicia…I’m so glad you’re here…📸 by @fga.studios

:: Community ::

For the last few years I’ve been hearing the same consistent thing from so many of you…”I need to meet more people like me”. And I’ve wanted to introduce so many of you for so long. The idea of gathering together has been floating around but…the energy hasn’t been present for me until now.

So let’s gather.

The studio is small, but we’ll be cozy together. Bring yourselves, an interested friend, if you’ve wanted to meet me or learn more about this work come through.

Thursday September 10th, 6-8pm.

Bring a snack to share, or just yourselves. A pillow, blanket or something comfy to sit on might feel good for you. Cards, journals or drawing pads all welcome. Bring something to place on the studio altar if you wish.

🌑 New Moons are for new beginnings, intention setting and fresh starts 🌑

Text or DM with questions and DM if you’ve never been here and need directions.

I love you all so very fucking much.

XO
Iris 💋

Song Dog Studios is an eco-friendly body art and design studio in the heart of Carmel Valley Village.

Owner Iris Brooke of @wildiris.tattoo is a multidisciplinary artist and writer specializing in handpoked ornamental and nature-inspired tattooing. Her work is informed by somatic practice, symbolism, the natural world, and the relationship between art and the body. She is also a printmaker, illustrator, designer, and herbalist. You can find more of her art, writing, and design work at @hey.irisbrooke.

Artist Felicia Gonzalez Acosta is a multidisciplinary artist working across tattooing, painting, sculpture, textiles, photography, and design. Her work is rooted in texture, color, nature, and the complexities of women. You can find her at @fga.studios.

Coyotes are often called the American Song Dog. Intelligent, family-oriented, fierce, and deeply adaptable, they felt like fitting guardians for the studio.

Here at Song Dog Studios, we weave inked songs into the bodies of our clients, one poke at a time.

We’d be honored to have you join us. ✨
