I would like to make this special post in gratitude for my amazing trainer, Keith Pendley. Only under his superior coaching was I able to set Alabama state records for the USPA in March and for the WRPF this last week. Thank you Keith for your dedication to your trainees and to the awesome sport of powerlifting. #uspapowerlifting #wrpfpowerlifting #wrpfalabama #strongdad

My second ever powerlifting meet was one week ago in Montgomery, AL. There, I broke state records in squat, deadlift and total of each lift plus bench for my age and weight class (198 lbs, age 55-59).

I thought I had the records last November in my first meet, but there is already a veteran lifter and world class athlete in his late fifties who holds state and national records for both the 220 and 242 lb weight classes. I was in the 220 wt class.

So, over the last 3 months I lost 25 lbs to compete in the lower 198 lb weight class. Last week, my top lifts for squat, bench and deadlift were 423.5, 265, and 423.5 lbs., respectively. To achieve this, I’ve trained every day getting up in the mornings between 3:30 and 4 before my 10-12 hour work day.

My hope is to be an inspiration for others, especially those over 50 who feel like they’re growing old and their bodies are wearing out. I used to feel fat, old and achy all over. I had put off buying life insurance because I was dreading the physical exam, certain that my high blood pressure was poorly controlled (I was on 3 medications) and that diabetes was just waiting to be discovered with a lab test.

I was 52 y/o when I decided that I didn’t want to continue to age declining into heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain and other common health problems associated with aging. I know as a physician that these conditions are largely under our own control. So I began a healthy journey that that has taken me far beyond my original goals. If my story can inspire others in my generation and older to dramatically alter their health for the better, then it is far more than anything I could do for them with a prescription pad.

Guilty pleasures
I made this one tough. I can hardly decide.

At 52 I decided that I was tired of getting older, fatter and weaker—feeling that my days of being active and strong were behind me. So I chose to do something about it and have worked at it every day since.

I turned 55 on Monday.

These clips are of me squatting 405 lbs (on my birthday) and doing a 435 lbs deadlift this morning before work.

I wanted to put these up to show that you can decide at any time to turn it around for yourself, even if you’re older.

As a physician who specializes in the treatment of chronic pain, I post this as an example to my friends, family and to my patients. Most people who suffer chronic musculoskeletal pain can improve or overcome it by committing to healthy lifestyle changes and to doing what it takes to make their bodies stronger—no matter the cause.

Sadly, most people opt for medicines, injections and surgeries because they are not willing to make lifestyle changes that would benefit them. #powerlifting #powerlifter #fyp #powerliftingmen #startingstrength #uspapower
