◇ What We Read In a Day ◇

As work & write from home moms!

Danie and I were inspired by seeing @thehelsproject and @bookish_grl do this and decided we wanted to give it a try too!

So, swipe to see how much we read throughout a (fairly) typical day for me and @fieldofproses

◇ QOTD◇
What does a typical reading day look like for you?

I read as much as I can, which is why I get so much done. Doing dishes or laundry? Audiobook. A few spare minutes waiting to pickup the kids? Ebook. After the kids are in bed? Reading.

Although so far this year, I've been slowing down a lot, and that feels nice too.

That being said, I read roughly 420 pages yesterday!

◇ Savannah, Georgia - Part 1 ◇

What a dream come true it was to meet my bookish bestie, @fieldofproses !!

After YEARS of talking about it, we finally met up IRL and had an absolute blast.

If you ever get the chance to meet up with your book besties, do it!

It was so hard pairing all my photos down to fit in a post, so this is only a very small amount. More to come!

Participating in today’s #coffeebooktag☕️ challenge because honestly… what’s better than caffeine and stories?

💭Tell me, what’s your go to coffee order when you’re reading?

Coffee tag:

Cappuccino, a book everyone has read but me: The knight and The Moth lol

Latte, a sweet read: Foxglove for me.

Mocha, an emotional read: Sound the Gong 🙌

Espresso, a book I struggled to get through: The Familiar.

Flat white, a book on my TBR: Golden Son

I’m tagging a few friends, no pressure and have fun!

I think we talk a lot about how aesthetic isn’t as important on here as showing up to be authentically who you are. But, I’m also very appreciative of people who cultivate beauty and joy through their gorgeous photos. So, today I’m sharing a few bookstagrammers that I love to follow because everything they post is so cozy and cohesive and pretty.

I fully agree that we should show up however we like whenever we like, but that doesn’t mean the art of aesthetic is dead either.

Who are some of your favorite bookstagrammers with a beautiful feed?

💅 TOOK TOO LONG TUESDAY- Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult 💅

What do I mean by took too long?

1. Pretty sure this book sat on my shelf for 10+ years.

2. I started my mass paperback copy of 502 pages over 2 months ago and just finished it this past weekend.

Side note- when my hubby saw this pic, his immediate feedback was it would have been better if my nails were painted. 🤣

Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult published in 1999 opens with the disintegration of Mariah & Colin’s marriage followed quickly by divorce. In the middle is their 7 year old Faith who starts interacting with an imaginary friend to cope. But is this just an imaginary friend or is this God? As unexplained miracles happen, the media gets wind and a custody case ensues- hence the title. Swipe for detailed synopsis.

What I liked:

Picoult has a way of bringing to light a hot topic & making readers explore it. It can be uncomfortable and anxiety ridden at times, but I will always applaud Picoult’s efforts.

Many interesting characters to like and hate.

All those media, medical, religious, and courtroom moments felt real.

Some complained about the ambiguous ending but I liked it.

Mental Health representation

Minor quibbles:

If Ian said sugar one more time…

Some secondary characters just seemed to drop off.

Some moments felt a bit dated but make allowances and recall it’s a 1999 pub date.

Overall my rating is 3.5 ⭐️/5; Goodreads rating 3.81.

🦋 SUPERB SUNDAY + COVER MATCH- Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty 🦋

Here One Moment is Liane Moriarty’s newest title published in September 2024. Already Goodreads has over 190k ratings with an average 4.03 rating. For me to read a book within a year of it being published is pretty unusual. Generally I’m a shelf it for 2-10 years kind of gal but this one drew me because 1) this was everywhere on bookstagram 2) I’ve enjoyed LM’s past titles & have been wanting to read more of them & 3) my IRL book club choose this book for January & I’m determined to be a better book club/buddy read partner. Swipe for detailed synopsis.

What I liked:

Impressive mastery juggling a ton of characters. I cared & wanted to know about all of them. It was woven together beautifully in the end.

The premise was so interesting- a woman predicts manner of death & when on a plane & then it starts to come true! The media/social media coverage felt accurate & with book chapters flipping between so many characters, my anticipation & foreboding levels were heightened.

Explored themes of destiny, free will, grieve, fear, and what’s important in life.

Ending still leaves room for was is real/could it be ?’s

Minor quibbles:

I don’t really have anything other than it’s pretty long at over 500 pages. But I can’t think of what to cut. It all flowed well.

QOTD: On average, how long does a newly acquired book sit on your shelf before you read it? Ignore books you have to read as part of promo tours and shelf can be physical, ebook, etc.

🤠 TRUE LOVE TUEADAY- The Bodyguard by Katherine Center 🤠

First I want to acknowledge this unbelievably cute, boot flower vase I found in @bowerbirdflowers shop and to serendipitously top it off I had the perfect book in my purse to match - The Bodyguard by Katherine Center! This book centers around Hannah, an Executive Protection Agent (aka “bodyguard”), hired to protect famous actor-in-hiding, Jack Stapleton. Only catch is, Jack doesn’t want his family to know he’s hired a bodyguard, cue my favorite - the fake dating trope.

What I liked:

Believable fake dating trope.
Fun to learn about bodyguard skill sets.
Love the Texas ranch setting and Jack’s loveable family, particularly Connie.
LOL moments and banter.
The true story behind the brothers’ estrangement was believable, it added to the story rather than detracted from it. And it was very nice to see them healing as a family.
All the celebrity-ness.
How things concluded with Jack’s stalker.

Minor Quibbles:

Some components of the epilogue regarding Hannah’s career were not believable.
There was a detail on the roof scene that did not seem correct.
I wished for a better Taylor reconciliation.

Overall, it’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a romcom book as much as The Bodyguard by Katherine Center. I’ve had some past Center reads just land in the okay zone but there was something so sweet, fresh, and happy about Hannah and Jack.

QOTD: What was the last title you read that pulled an author out of the “okay” range?

🕵️‍♂️ MYSTERY MONDAY- Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie 🕵️‍♂️

World renowned Belgian detective, Hercules Poirot just can’t get a break. Even when he vacations on remote Smuggler’s Island of Leathercombe Bay, murder and intrigue seem to follow him when the body of beautiful, former actress Arlena Stuart is found strangled on the beach. Evil Under the Sun was first published in June of 1941 and is book 23 of Christie’s Hercules Poirot series.

What I liked:

With a wide cast of suspicious characters and their varied alibis, I was left guessing until the great reveal.
Increased tension with each conversation and observation noted by Hercules.
Enjoyed this unique setting.

Minor Quibbles:

This cast of characters was very similar to past Christie novels, particularly when it comes to female characters- there is the gorgeous woman, the judgemental woman, the good but overlooked woman, the no-nonsense woman, & the naive young woman.
The twist of how the murder was carried out was clever but also a bit complicated and far fetched.
Similar-ish antagonist story angle from another recent Christie title I read.

Overall I’m still a big Agatha Christie fan but I think I need a reading break from her so the stories feel fresh and unique again.

QOTD: What was the last title you read that felt a bit formulaic?

🌎 BATZ Book Club Read- Orbital by Samantha Harvey 🌎

BATZ’s (Books Across Time Zones) first read of 2025 was Orbital by Samantha Harvey, 2024 Booker Prize winner. This 207 page book features a team of 6 astronauts living and working on the International Space Station. Each chapter is one of the 16 ascending or descending orbits taken by the International Space station around Earth in a 24 hour period and follows different astronauts’ internal thoughts while they interact and complete mundane tasks around the space station. Thank you @joanie.reads.to.52 @randombookswithmj @amandameanders & @marie.saniuk for the interesting conversation about this thoughtful read.

What I liked:

Beautiful writing featuring universal themes such as time, life, hope, despair, our responsibility to our planet, etc.

“They’re humans with a godly view and that’s the blessing and also the curse.”

Minor Quibbles:

I love literary fiction but this felt more like poetry. I fully expected to finish this short read in 2-3 days, instead it took a full week. Even reading at a slower pace and rereading passages, I didn’t feel like I was fully grasping what the author was trying to tell me.

QOTD: What was the last shorter length book you read that you felt took a deceptively long time to finish?
