Grassroots collective of food workers organizing food workers! Mutual aid food distro, political ed + more 🌿
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hi Friends! I’m back to tell you about my latest “Reaping” Substack article, which tells the origin story of @taiwanfoodandfarmtour, a diasporic delegation that’s building bridges between its organic, regenerative, seed-saving + food sovereignty-focused work in the U.S. + its small farmer peers in Taiwan. The story shows what you can do when you feel a longing to connect with ancestral, often hidden, roots through the plants, vegetables + fruits that your forbears cultivated + enjoyed. But also when you organize, plan + fundraise to make it happen✅ Peer-to-peer learning—especially when occurs across language, borders + oceans—is one of the most powerful + joyful aspects of the alternative food movement. Check out Chapter 9 of my book,“Reaping,”to learn more about this topic! It’s titled “Sowing the Seeds of the Alt Food System Future: Visits with Indigenous + Diasporic Women.” 🌾 In my Substack article, you’ll meet Li Schmidt, founder of @culturalrootsnursery, Kimberly Chou Tsun An of @fig_nyc_ + @odetochoy. The delegation is planning its second cohort tour in March, this time in two groups: one made up of farmers, the second of food systems leaders.👏👏👏 🔗 to my “Reaping” Substack in bio!

Honored to be a part of this year's @nycfoodpolicy 40 under 40 cohort! Have admired many alums of this impactful group in the past. Extra cool to see @streetvendorproject & @nycmayor among the special honorees this year. If anything, lists like these are a reminder of all the inspiring work being done in the city, and what a privilege and opportunity it is to be a part of it! Really thought they'd cut some of my enthusiastic answers here but no! Swipe through for the longform thoughts you may know and love. @nycfood let's talk about these independent-restaurant-as-community-benefit supports/acknowledgements/incentives!

Calling our New York City network 📣 beloved comrades @choycommons are THISCLOSE to hitting their sign up goal of 450 shares for Asian Vegetable Club — aka their collaborative, cooperatively run CSA 💪 Looking for a weekly community supported agriculture pick up featuring culturally resonant and locally thriving veg from @choydivision @gentletimefarming @starroutefarm? Hop over to @choycommons to grab a share! Not only talented, heart-centered farmers, these folks are powerful organizers, working together since 2021 to explore “What does it mean to be visible, engaged, and organized as Asian Americans within the food/climate justice movement? We are grateful to ride alongside Choy Commons — most recently deepening our connections with the collective raising funds and growing veg for @fig_nyc_’s Food Security Program with @citgny, and with worker-owners Kaija, Salt and Christina joining the pilot @taiwanfoodandfarmtour 🥬💚 May we continue to learn and grow together, and support each others work — and we all benefit when we can enjoy these incredible vegetables, grown by people who’s love, labor and land are valued and cherished.

Here we are! Our team had an amazing work session last week led by fellow farmer @pansorifarm on decision making structures and conflict resolution methods! We talked about worker self directed nonprofits, how we can use working groups and consensus decision making to make our work ~flow~, and took major inspiration from the @sylviariveralawproject for organizing a team made up of a mix of paid employees and volunteers. Our goal with this Community Land Trust is to make CHANGES to business as usual for farmland transfer and tenure. We want farmers, especially BIPOC and other historically underserved farmers, to have secure land access where they can form long term relationship with the land, each other, and not be in crushing debt to do so. Our vision includes moving away how "normal" nonprofits run and organize their labor - starting by designing a structure that cements lessees' decision making power. Subscribe to our Substack to get links to some of the amazing resources Hyunhee compiled for us! Thank you to @thepull_wpul for hosting us in your beautiful space, and @stamford_coffee for lunch 💛 We'll see you on Friday at our Oyster Pop Up at Stamford Coffee!!
