Grimes County, founded in 1846 in East Texas, grew out of a plantation economy where enslaved African Americans made up the majority of the labor force and, for a period after emancipation, the majority of the entire county.

That legacy still shows today: out of roughly 29,000 residents, more than 3,500 are Black, making up 11–13% of the county’s population — a community whose presence is rooted in generations of survival through violence, displacement, and political suppression.

After the Civil War, Black residents briefly held real political power in Grimes County. Their numbers, organization, and leadership reshaped local government during Reconstruction. But that rise triggered a violent white backlash.

White conservatives formed paramilitary groups and, eventually, the White Man’s Union, which used intimidation, assassinations, and coordinated political takeovers to dismantle Black political influence. The 1900 Anderson shootout marked the turning point when white supremacist forces seized full control and locked in a Jim Crow order that lasted for decades.

Throughout the early 20th century, Grimes County saw racial terror lynchings — including the 1922 lynching of Jim Early — and systematic efforts to push Black residents out of civic life. These forces contributed to the long‑term decline of the Black population share from its Reconstruction majority to today’s 11–13%.

Even so, the Black community remains a foundational part of the county’s identity, culture, and history.

Modern Grimes County still carries the imprint of this past. The demographic reality — a county of 29,000 people with a Black population of more than 3,500 — is inseparable from the county’s long struggle over land, power, and whose voices were allowed to shape public life.

The present‑day numbers are not just statistics; they are the living outcome of a century‑and‑a‑half of resistance, suppression, migration, and resilience.

LaMar Jordan has spent almost twenty years behind bars for a murder he didn't commit. Two witnesses we're taking to the grand jury and lied in order to get an indictment on Mr Jordan. The same two witnesses testified at trial that they had never seen him with a gun or witnessed anything, this time they told the truth. Out of twenty-five people that testified, not a single person testified that they seen him with a weapon or that they seen him shoot anyone. Yet he was convicted anyway.

Twelve years into his sentence, his lawyer finally found what should have cleared him from the start: evidence the police had been hiding. Eye witness statements pointing to someone else. Physical evidence showing the shooter and victim were very close together, which contradicts testimony. There is atlease eight more pieces of evidence that could prove his innocence. His original trial lawyer later signed an affidavit saying that if he'd had access to these files, LaMar would have been acquitted. This was prosecutorial misconduct, plain and simple.

LaMar deserves a new trial. He deserves to go home to his family. Sign and share this petition to demand justice and accountability. Link in bio to Sign the petition https://www.change.org/BringLamarhome
