I COMPLETED MY 1ST YEAR DIRECTING MFA AT UCLA🎬❤️☀️🚀

While the quarter ended with screenings and screamings, my joy and growth continue.

I have learned so much about filmmaking, absolutely, across the different roles and departments, from pre-production to post-production.

I have honed my skills in various ways by being on set for 5 weeks this quarter and by following my documentary protagonist Lorinda in all ways possible last quarter.

I have encountered numerous challenges and overcome so many seeming-impossible tasks. After each step outside of my comfort zone, I have a brave move forward. This forever changes what I believe I can do and who I think I am. As Emily Dickinson famously said, “I dwell in possibilities”. This year at UCLA consolidated this belief.

But more importantly, I have learned to be a better person who can listen to my inner voices more and cares for others more in a healthy way. Filmmaking, ultimately, is a collective and collaborative art and this sense of artist-community fills me with warmth and motivation.

All my cohorts have such unique stories and styles that inspire me to discover my own voice more. Right now I trust my gut that I want to tell comedic, heart-felt, and thought-provoking stories on the big screen.

From last September to this June, I have also met so many new friends, colleagues, professors, and mentors who have guided me and impacted me in one way another, who told me to “throw rocks to your characters”, to “adjust the self-doubt volume”, to not treat “filmmaking as the only important thing in your life”… with which I take to heart. Sure, being a cinematic-storyteller is my dream and goal, but there are so many tiny beautiful moments in life I want to savor and treasure that will ultimately enrich the stories I tell.

There were SO MANY 🥄 in THE ROOM! Tonight made me rethink what cinema can be. It’s a collaboration that goes beyond just filmmakers. The vibrant audience, the creative atmosphere, the full-house theater, the props (Spoons*N!!) and slogans (WAAATTTEETRR🌊) and more all shape the viewing experiences. It is truly one of the most memorable movie nights ever. Thank you Alex for experiencing this with me!!✨🎬😂🍻
