UPLIFTED directed by Alison Wong-Huchard, Karen Runde

Water.

We drink it, cook with it, clean with it. We shower, swim, flush, and wash—often without a second thought. At the turn of a tap or the push of a button, water flows. So ever-present, we forget how vital it truly is. Yet for nearly one in four people globally, safe drinking water remains out of reach. In Kenya, climate change is deepening this crisis. Unpredictable rainfall, rising temperatures, and intensified droughts have made traditional water sources unreliable.

This short documentary tells the story of Kithangachini, a remote village in Kenya, where children walk three kilometers every day after school to fetch water from the river. Along the way, they face extreme heat, the threat of wild animals, and the risk of violence. The water is neither clean nor safe to drink.

But change is possible. Through unique local and global partnerships, specially designed water filters are brought and installed in the village schools—offering hope, safety, and a new future. This is the story of how clean water transformed a community and touched the lives of 854 students.

.
RHYTHM OF ANCESTORS- YORÙBÁ BÀTÁ directed by Abdulafiz Opeyemi Shittu @reelbymeeky

.

The Rhythm of Ancestors: Yoruba Bàtá enters the world of the drummers who keep this ancient tradition alive. Through performances, intimate conversations, archival memories, and encounters with cultural custodians, the film explores the Bàtá’s place in Yoruba spirituality, identity, dance, and oral tradition. But beneath the music lies a pressing question: what happens to a tradition when fewer young people are learning to speak its language? As contemporary Nigerian music reaches audiences around the world, indigenous rhythms continue to influence the sounds of a new generation. Yet the cultural knowledge embedded within those rhythms can easily disappear if the traditions that created them are forgotten. Moving between the sacred, the communal, and the contemporary, the film becomes a meditation on memory and cultural survival. It celebrates the drummers preserving the voice of their ancestors while asking whether that voice will continue to be heard by generations yet to come. The Rhythm of Ancestors: Yoruba Bàtá is a journey into sound, identity, and the fragile space between inheritance and disappearance.

THE RED and THE GREY MATTER- A New Architecture in Africa directed by Willie Schumann @herrwillie

.
For seven years filmmaker Willie Schumann and Rainer Traube followed the emerging scene of African architects, who dared to build with Raw Earth. A thermal active, climate neutral and traditional building material that almost vanished due to the influence of the global north. Within that time one of the main protagonists of the film Francis Kéré became the first African laureate of the Pritzker Prize, the Nobel Prize for architecture, and Ghanian Lesley Lokko curated the first mainly African themed Architecture Biennale in Venice.

AFFIF 2026 OFFICIAL SELECTION| A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
.
A RETURN TO THE LAND directed by Lauren Groenewald
.
Return to the Land is a powerful, story-driven short film that invites young people—especially in rural settings—to reimagine farming as a bold, entrepreneurial, and meaningful path forward. Set in the agricultural heartlands of Kasungu and Ntchisi in Malawi, the film follows the real-life journeys of Joseph Banda, Wenyani Chirwa, and Briget Maxwell—three inspiring youth who are reclaiming land, identity, and their futures through sustainable farming. While rooted in agriculture, the film reflects more deeply on the meaning of land in Africa, the complex realities rural youth face, and the resilience it takes to carve out a future with limited resources but limitless potential. It challenges gender norms, celebrates intergenerational knowledge, and invites new conversations about business, community, and change from the ground up
