Today, I’m bowing in deep gratitude to three women who have helped me realize the dream of manifesting my oracle deck, Witch’s Window Oracle.

Holle Finch, @finchstazam, a close friend and a talented potter and painter, witnessed the early days of the project. She climbed inside the vision and lovingly illustrated the first half of the deck, bringing what had only lived inside my mind into the world. Her ability to translate an energetic feeling into an image confirmed that this deck was meant to be.

Chelsea Romaniello, @sea_romanie, an artist with a passion for whimsy and magic, was introduced to me by a friend. She joined the team and seamlessly illustrated the rest of the cards. Chelsea immediately connected with the tone and truth of the deck, and the collaboration between us was incredibly joyful. Her eye for detail and enthusiasm was invaluable.

In a world filled with AI, it is a true pleasure to be introducing a deck that offers hand-drawn images. Holle and Chelsea made that dream a reality.

Even with all the cards drawn it would be true to say that I had no idea how to self-publish an oracle deck. Enter Jennifer Steidley, @jennifercoopersteidley, a seasoned deck creator and graphic designer. Jennifer has been my mentor in all things deck-related, and she has spent countless hours answering questions and encouraging me. She has also worked tirelessly to help me design the cards and guidebook. Her expertise and generosity was the final piece needed.

Without these women, Witch’s Window Oracle would not exist. I am sending endless waves of gratitude to each of you!

First of all… no free feet pics. Second of all we start off our onggi masterclass with foot wedging!

Foot wedging is a traditional Korean method of wedging large quantities of clay to thoroughly mix clay at the same time greatly increasing its plasticity. It’s much harder than it looks! Come by our masterclass to try it yourself :) 👣👣👣

We made this beautiful big onggi jar with our Onggi Masterclass students but cannot fire it.. so we had some fun with its departure!

Thank you very much to our students for your excellent work - you can see that the walls were very strong!

If you’d like to learn how to make a vessel like this (departed) one in Korea, email us to be notified - info@ceramicmasterclass.com - when registration opens for 2025.

I will be teaching onggi in Australia later this year - check out @stonestudioandco for details!

This is important.. so I demonstrate it a few times!

Plates, trays, basins, jars; these all start somewhere. To make the base of an onggi or any other form you like, this technique allows to you to make a perfect circular slab on your wheel to then take in new directions.

What you are watching is the shaping and compressing of the ba-dak 바닥 (base disc) with the bang-mang-i 방망이 tool and cutting with the mit-ka-sae 밑가세.

This year’s classes in Korea are now full but I will be teaching onggi techniques in Australia in September this year (check out @stonestudioandco for details), and if you’d like to learn in Korea in 2025, email us to be notified (info@ceramicmasterclass.com) when registration opens.

There’s no one else I’d want to sing dancing queen in a van with…or learn Onggi with.

Thanks to our incredible teacher @kwakkyungtae for your patience and generosity of knowledge, to our Boss @jardinet_pot for your unmatched care and hospitality, @studio__tomi @maisie.biggs @kangjaehoo_n for all of your hard work! And to all my fellow students for the joy and laughs along the way

To make the walls of an onngi jar with the taryeom-jil 타렴질 technique, you first need to form the taryeom 타렴! Stretching out your clay into long, consistent coils is an essential first step for making onggi, but is also a valuable technique which can be applied toward all slab making, or any circumstances where you need to make coils of any size.

We tell our students that you can judge if you’re doing this step correctly almost purely by sound - loud percussive ‘bang’ noises mean that you’re going to deform the clay, the correct noise ends up being more of a ’swoosh’. This technique takes some practice, but the rewards of gaining the ability to make coils in this manner extend far beyond onggi!

This year’s autumn Onggi Masterclass and Learning Residency are now full but if you’re interested in joining us in 2025, email us to be notified (info@ceramicmasterclass.com) when registration opens!

This Onggi Masterclass was a great opportunity to collaborate and make something very special!

With our Onggi Masterclass students, we collectively made a very large onggi jar, using the skills that the students have learnt and practiced over the previous 12 days.

Students and staff completing a layer of taryeom-jil each to form the great walls of this monumental piece. It was great fun to see how their dedication and hard work practicing enabled them to help create a single unified work!

The base of an onggi is called the Ba-dak 바닥, and you can see here how it is initially formed by hand. This versatile technique can be used to make plates and slabs - adaptions to the technique can allow you to make a slab of any shape you like!

There is a specific size and thickness that our Onggi students should aim for, however it is also fun to practice the final throw and see how big you can make your ba-dak. We found the disks ended up forming a beautiful lotus pond on the wedging table!
