From Davis High to the Olympics 🇺🇸🏃‍♀️

One of the coolest autographs in my collection.

Fiona O’Keeffe signed this Seattle Mariners hat for me when I was a senior at Davis High and she was only a sophomore. At the time, she was already establishing herself as one of California’s best young distance runners. Looking back at this autograph now, knowing where her career would eventually take her, makes it that much more special.

Fiona went on to become a 2× California Division I Cross Country State Champion, Gatorade California Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, California 3,200m State Champion, and U.S. Junior 5,000m Champion and meet-record holder.

From Davis, she went on to Stanford, where she became a multiple-time NCAA All-American, Pac-12 Cross Country Champion, Pac-12 Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and Stanford record holder.

Then came an incredible chapter: in her marathon debut, Fiona won the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:22:10, setting a Trials record and becoming the youngest woman ever to win the event. The victory earned her a place on Team USA at the Paris Olympics. 🇺🇸

Pretty incredible to think that the Davis High sophomore who signed my Mariners hat all those years ago would go on to become an Olympian.

Davis High ➡️ Stanford ➡️ Team USA 🇺🇸

Definitely one I’m glad I held onto. ✍️

🗽New York Road Runners has announced the professional field for the 2026 TCS @nycmarathon, which takes place on November 1st. Headlining the fields will be defending champions @hellenobiri and @bensonkipruto24.

In addition to marking the 50th anniversary of the New York City Marathon’s move to a five-borough course, this year’s race will also celebrate 50 years since the introduction of a professional elite field. Bill Rodgers, the 1976 men’s champion, will return for race-week festivities, while 1976 and 1977 women’s champion Miki Gorman, who died in 2015, will be honored and represented by her daughter, Danielle Mika Nagel.

➡️ Swipe through for the full professional fields and some of the storylines to watch.

It has been 27 editions of the New York City Marathon since someone has successfully defended the men’s New York City Marathon title—Kenya’s John Kagwe completed the feat in 1998. 🇰🇪 Benson Kipruto is looking to become the next man to pull it off, as he seeks his fifth World Marathon Major title victory. He won last year’s race by edging out his compatriot Alexander Mutiso Munyao by three-hundredths of a second.

• 🇬🇧 Patrick Dever is the next-best returner from last year’s race. The British star ran 2:08:58 for fourth place in his debut but was later upgraded to third place as Albert Korir, last year’s third place finisher and 2022 champion, was banned for five years after he admitted to doping.

• The most exciting debut on the men’s side is 2025 10,000m World Championship bronze medalist 🇸🇪 Andreas Almgren. He is coming off a dominant victory in the European Championships 10,000m final, where he lapped all but six runners in the field. Almgren owns the European half marathon record in 58:41 from last October’s Valencia Half Marathon.

• Previous champions also include Geoffrey Kamworor (2017/2019) and Abdi Nageeye (2024).

I realized this was my 10th year going to Western States. In 2016, I had just moved to SF to work for Strava and we were a sponsor of the race. I drove our bright orange sprinter van up to Tahoe with @byronpittam and @annievranizan. On the way up, we went through a car wash and I think I dented the roof a bit. It was a learning experience: my first time doing on-the-ground event support and my first time at an ultra marathon. And it changed my life.

This was the first year that Jim Walmsley ever raced - the (in)famous Found on 49 year (@trappephoto was our photographer that year too). It was riveting to watch. But what really affected me was seeing the golden hour finishers on Sunday. “These are just normal people,” I thought. Running 100 miles looked grueling, they had pushed themselves to the brink of collapse. But if they could do it, why couldn’t I? Seeing is believing. Before that year, the farthest I’d run was a marathon. Since then, I’ve run three 100 milers and countless other ultras.

Thank you, trail running, for everything.

So, here are some more photos from Foresthill because that was the only aid station I could get out to this year.

With spring marathons winding down and summer track in their future @pumaeliterunning has been back and forth from homebase in North Carolina to altitude in New Mexico. A strong base underneath them, the team now turns to a familiar burn with laps around the track full of lactic acid.

Keep an eye out for @diamondleagueathletics debuts from @ggraciemorris & @dorcus_ewoi125 as they take to the track in Shanghai, China this weekend, kicking off the track circuit and summer of racing for the team.

The trails you run on are being defunded and sold.

Women trail runners aren’t waiting for someone else to fix this. @heidewrite reports on The New Suffragettes doing trail work, calling reps, and turning group runs and races into organizing meetings.

We are so sad to announce that Fiona O’Keeffe will have to withdraw from this years Boston Marathon due to injury.

Fiona always trains and competes with big goals in mind and with this comes the inherent risk that every runner knows well. In the past few days she picked up an upper hamstring tear that will keep her from the start line. As coaches, it is heartbreaking to see an athlete pour every ounce of themselves into months of preparation towards a single goal, only to be sidelined by injury in the last moment.

We are wishing her a speedy recovery and can’t wait to see her back out there soon.

Good luck to her teammate, Alex Maier, and everyone racing tomorrow. We are excited to cheer you on. All eyes ahead- onward!

Just hours before the 130th Boston Marathon is set to take place, the elite women’s field has taken a significant hit.

The Boston Athletic Association confirmed that Fiona O’Keeffe has withdrawn from the race due to a recent hamstring issue, removing one of the most anticipated American contenders from Monday’s lineup.

Hope you're taking off tomorrow 😮👀

The American women's field at the Boston Marathon is arguably one of the best in history. Who do you have taking top American honors? 🇺🇸
