Huge thanks to Fiona Kearney, Director of The Glucksman for this insightful article on my work in the Irish Arts Review. Very honoured to be featured!

IRISH ARTS REVIEW/ SUMMER 2026
CURATOR’S CHOICE
Fiona Kearney selects Claire Halpin’s painting Panorama Europa from the University College Cork Art Collection

“As the title suggests, Panorama Europa presents a wide-ranging view of Europe that encompasses geographic, historic and cultural relationships.
The painting shifts from images that evoke the religious traditions and conflicted histories of the island of Ireland on the far left through to the civic-realm architecture of Eastern Europe and China’s Belt and Road initiative on the right, moving through depictions of war, public protest and totalitarian gatherings.

There are references to celebrated paintings such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The Tower of Babel (c. 1563), Caravaggio’s Medusa (c. 1597) and Seán Keating’s Men of the South (1921-1922), and other cultural signifiers. This extraordinary work is filled with allusions to military history, cartography,
religion, past civilisations and contemporary society that fill the canvas and encourage us to understand these plural, and often contentious, perspectives of what it means to be European in the 21st century.

…..The Glucksman research-led commission in partnership with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for EU Integration and Citizens” Rights at University College Cork (UCC), inviting the artist Claire Halpin to create an artwork for the UCC
Art Collection that considered anti-discrimination rights in the context of EU relations with Northern İreland, Ukraine and China.

As Ireland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026, the Glucksman will display Panorama Europa in the civic space of the museum until 1 November 2026.
