What a Convergence!

From the 10 to the 12 October, we gathered on djandak, the Traditional Land of the Djaara, kindly hosted by Jonai Farms and Meatsmiths and Tumpinyeri Growers, for our annual Food Sovereignty Convergence. It was the biggest, most productive and enriching we have had in years.

As the world as we know it is rapidly changing, people from all round the world are rising against fascism and injustice while fighting for their own future. In this context, AFSA members, allies and aligned organisations came together to build solidarity, share current struggles and priorities, and most importantly talk about how we are going to collectively work for a world beyond capitalism, patriarchy and coloniality.

We listened to Gellung Warl elected Co-Chair Djaran talk about Treaty and Tammi Jonas share the story of the international Food Sovereignty movement. We heard from Food Connect Foundation, Organic Regenerative Investment Cooperative, Australian Manufacture Workers Union, Earthworker Cooperative, Holding Ground, Degrowth Network, AI Safety Symposium, Pesticide Action Australia, Namanbunda Farm, Otway Agroforestry Network, FILEF (Federation of Italian Migrants Workers and their Families), Guerilla Gardening Naarm, Yarra Valley Water, Merri-bek Tech, and many other farmers, researchers and individuals, coming together to imagine and enact better ways of living on Country.

We talked, ate and sat around the fire. We formed new connections and strengthened existing ones. We thought deeply and strategised. As always, we put First Peoples and Country first, and we held space to embrace the complexities of farming in so-called Australia.

Ultimately, we got inspired and energised, nourishing our bodies, our minds, and our hearts, because good food and a good life for all is not a radical concept.

Convergence is not just a one-off gathering or a space to simply share our struggles, we work on our theory of change, the issues of our time and how to create change continually.

AFSA’s Food Sovereignty Convergence 2026 Declaration, including actions for the year, will be out soon.

Let’s keep the fight going ✊
Viva!

Three years ago, Australia had a chance to build a better future. We still have hope. It’s still Yes!

We still have hope because that day, 6.2 million Australians voted yes for a change to the Constitution to recognise Australia’s First Peoples and establish a First Peoples’ Voice to Parliament to advise government on issues affecting First Peoples’ communities.

We still have hope because of inspirational and visionary leadership of so many Indigenous leaders throughout Australia, including those in Traditional Owner Corporations, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), the many Indigenous owned and led businesses and services.

We still have hope because of the Allies walking alongside Indigenous peoples, passionately advocating for substantive and meaningful reconciliation, truth and justice. Reconciliation Victoria works with over 35 metro and regional Local Reconciliation Groups, including Australia’s first multicultural reconciliation group, as well as a Younger Allies Network, engaging with Traditional Owners on local reconciliation work.

And most of all, we still have hope because in Victoria, we have implemented Voice, Treaty, and Truth. In the last ten years, the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, a democratically elected body representing the First Peoples of Victoria, has been the Voice to the Victorian Parliament.

It has established the Yoorrook Justice Commission - a four year royal commission of truth-telling - and negotiated the Statewide Treaty which established Gellung Warl, a democratically-elected group of First People representing and making decisions on behalf of First Peoples across Victoria, Nginma Ngainga Wara that will provide independent oversight and accountability for Government on behalf of First Peoples, and Nyerna Yoorrook Telkuna that will continue the Truth-telling and healing process so everyone across the state can understand our shared past.

We still have hope because we know the majority of Victorians support Treaty.

We need to continue to actively stand up for Voice, Treaty and Truth, and stand against racism.

Let’s be hopeful. Let’s be brave.

One conversation at a time.
One step at a time.
Together.

STRENGTH IN SOLIDARITY

⏰️ Friday 23rd October, 6-8pm
📍 Memorial Hall, Dandenong
🔗 RSVP essential - link in bio

Victoria’s diversity is our strength. We speak nearly 300 languages, cheer on dozens of sports teams, and celebrate countless different holidays. Our state has the first Treaty with First Nations people in the country. That’s something to celebrate.

But right now, we’re seeing billionaires get richer and politicians like Pauline Hanson trying to pit communities against each other. This is nothing more than a dangerous distraction tactic and it’s time to call it out.

Together, we can hold our politicians accountable to a higher standard and show there’s no room for racism in politics.

✨ This event is an opportunity to learn about Treaty in Victoria, and the connected struggles of First Nations, migrant and refugee communities. We will have speakers share stories of strength, and valuable insights on staying informed ahead of the state election to ensure that our communities are not divided by racist rhetoric.

The event will be held in Memorial Hall, Dandenong at 6-8:30pm on Friday 23rd October. More info including speakers to be announced soon. We look forward to seeing you, link to register in bio!

Lessons from the decade of organising and community power that led to Treaty in Victoria.

"The First Treaty is born from the strength, resilience and resistance of our people. It is born from our unyielding love for our communities, our country, and our unwavering belief in a better future for all." - Ngarra Murray, Former Co-Chair @firstpeoplesvic Graphic with quote from Ngarra Murray: Former co-chair First Peoples Assembly of Victoria, a First Nations woman wearing a dark dress and necklace. The quote reads: "Today we stand in a new era: the Treaty era. It is a turning point in the life of this nation. The First Treaty is born from the strength, resilience and resistance of our people. It is born from our unyielding love for our communities,
our country, and our unwavering belief in a better future for all."
