I am thrilled to announce that Ms. Veronica Holmes, my first HBCU Mellon Mays Scholar, has successfully defended her honors thesis, Beyond the Pulpit: The Black Church and Its Impact on Black Neighborhoods. Her research provides a profound exploration into how Black churches serve as anchor institutions, influencing community dynamics, aspirations, the nature of crime, and access to essential resources. So happy to be her research advisor and committee chair.

Veronica highlights how historically, the Black Church has been a cornerstone of African American resilience and activism, offering spiritual guidance, fostering community cohesion, and spearheading social justice initiatives. Ms. Holmes' work delves into this rich legacy, critically examining the multifaceted roles these institutions play in shaping the socio-economic landscapes of Black neighborhoods.

We are excited to further develop this research and prepare it for publication, aiming to shed light on the enduring significance of the Black Church in contemporary society. This endeavor aligns with our commitment to fostering scholarship that not only honors our heritage but also drives meaningful change.

Special thanks to Dr. Rynetta Davis, her second reader on the committee; Dr. Katie Burnett, her advisor in English; Dr. La Tanya Rogers, former Honors Program Director and Interim Dean; and Dr. Magana Kabugi, Interim Director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honors Program at Fisk.

Join us in celebrating Ms. Holmes' remarkable achievement and consider supporting our ongoing research efforts. Together, we can continue to empower scholars who illuminate the pivotal roles of Black institutions in our communities.
