What are you reading this week?

It’s been a while between last, now, next posts (mostly because this mood reader is skittish about publicly declaring “I shall read that next!” when there’s a 94% chance I will absolutely not read that next). But what the hey – let’s give it another try!

✨

📘 LAST, Or: The Wheel Wills What Wheels Will
THE EYE OF THE WORLD
If I was reading Robert Jordan’s paperback I would have DNFed, but Rosamund Pike carried the audiobook with such aplomb that I stayed the course

📖 NOW, Or: Mother, I Crave Academia
FRANKENSTEIN
A reread of the one and only Mary Shelley 🙌
CHRISTABEL
Coleridge’s Gothic dread brings me such joy and I can’t believe I haven’t read this one before
A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN
Even if Virginia Woolf’s novels aren’t your vibe (they aren’t mine - sorry, Virginia) her essays are 😙🤌 chef’s kiss

📚 NEXT, Or: Little Pot of Horrors: the Illuminated Text?
ISABELLA NAGG AND THE POT OF BASIL
Oliver Darkshire’s tweets from the Henry Sotheran bookshop are full of dry, British, bookish humour, so I am VERY excited that his fantasy debut has arrived at the local library!

✨

Tagging a few book buds to share their Last, Now, Next too, but no pressure!

Paperback books with their pages fanned open and bundles of tiny white flowers are scattered throughout. The three books lying face-up in the centre of the image are all fiction titles. Each book has a single word spelled beneath it in wooden scrabble tiles: LAST, NOW, NEXT. From left to right the featured books are: Robert Jordan’s ‘The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World’, which has a cover design showing a white woman in a long navy blue cloak standing beneath a huge steel wheel suspended between two green stone columns; Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’, the cover of which has a cropped version of NA Abildgaard’s painting, The Wounded Philoctetes; and Oliver Darkshire’s ‘Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil’, which has an illustrated cover in the style of an illuminated manuscript, with swirling curlicues, goblins, pieces of fruit, and farm animals. The entire image has been edited to have a warm, cosy feel with faint gold sparkles dotted throughout.

Are you looking forward to any January releases?

🧚🏻 Today’s Two-for-Tuesday post features Emily Wilde! Why?

Because there are just FIVE WEEKS TO GO ’til ‘Compendium of Lost Tales’ is released 🥳

I cannot WAIT to return to Heather Fawcett’s world of tricksy fae and grumbly academics 🙌

Tagging a few friends to share their Two-for-Tuesday faves too, but I’d love to know:

💬 If you were one of the Fae, would you rather belong to an icy kingdom, or a sunny one?

The two books featured in the centre of the image are Heather Fawcett’s fantasy titles, ‘Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries’ and ‘Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands’. The Encyclopaedia of Faeries rests in the top quadrant of the image with its cover facing upward. The cover design has quaint red toadstools and blue-and-green leaves illustrated on a cream background. The Map of the Otherlands is held in a white woman’s hands, its cover folded back to show the title page. A pair of wire-framed reading glasses waits above it. The entire image has been edited to have a warm hue with faint gold sparkles dotted throughout.

When does a book sing to you?
🪶
“Skysong” is the retelling you didn’t know you needed!
@cawrightbooks perfectly encapsulates the darkside to some of our favourite fairytales.
🪶
There is beauty to the humanity of these tales, and there is equal darkness and grief.
🪶
“Oriane is a skylark, and the sun only rises if she wills it.

Every morning she transforms from woman to bird, calling the dawn with her song”

But like everything beautiful in the world, there are those who appreciate it, and those that will seek to own it.

This beautiful retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Nightingale” will have you cozied up reading into the wee hours of the morning.

And leaving you with hope that we are not always as alone as we can feel.

Thank you so much to @panterapress for letting me join in on this beautiful book tour and letting me read this story that has found its way into my heart as one of my favourite books!

Be sure to be following the beautiful bookstagrammers on this tour, singing the praises for this book that is a must-read for anyone who loves fairytales, magic and a song of hope.
