Still wrapping my head around seeing my work at Vancouver Fashion Week 🥹

I competed in The Fashion Games at @lasallevancouver where students were tasked with upcycling discarded denim and marathon t-shirts into original designs in just 6 hours.

I’m an avid upcycler. I love making something discarded into something beautiful. I wanted this look to represent not only sustainability, but also the ethics of clothing. Using something as disposable as marathon t-shirt: often worn just once, then left in the back of a closet before being donated and ultimately unwanted. A milestone, yes, but rarely enough to justify the garish colours and loud graphics, and certainly not something appealing enough for anyone who didn’t run the race to want to wear. And of course, they’re covered in logos (a pet peeve of mine… coming from a marketing background, where merch is produced in excess in the pursuit of exposure, with little to no consideration for longevity or whether anyone would actually want it)

We often forget that all clothing is handmade. That buying something cheap means someone lost out. The deplorable conditions of garment workers overseas is something I grapple with, constantly in conflict with my simultaneous love for fashion and disgust with the industry. I made the denim top to include as many original stitches and design details as I could. An homage to the original maker. In upcycling, the untouched fabric is often the most coveted because it’s easier to work with, but I love incorporating existing details. Not just for sustainability, but because it feels collaborative, like someone else already started the design conversation for me.

The icing on the cake was Sarah Murray wearing my skirt while hosting @vanfashionweek. An incedible honour for me that still feels surreal. My first fashion week in Vancouver, only 7 months into my Fashion Design program at @vccfashion, and my design ended up on the stage. Wow. Thank you @flashandsoul for the opportunity. I am beyond grateful. Sarah Murray is pictured here with @larissahealey. Photo courtesy @ctsoukalas
