On Saturday, October 3, we held our second Repair Walk, journeying from the Flatbush Library to the Crown Heights branch. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from repair practitioners—the individuals whose everyday skills support their neighbors and local economies. Through these experiences, we continue building our digital map of repair heritage across Brooklyn. Where we stopped: Blade Alliance - Cutz Bus (Blade in Brooklyn) Jean’s Computer And Sale (Jean's Computer Repair And Sale) Contreras Beauty (Nostrand Beauty Equipments) Steve Shoe Repair Wireless & Repair (Jazz Ifix Wireless / Top wireless & repair corp.) African Record Centre (African Record Center Ltd) We hope to see you at our next Repair Walk on Saturday, October 17, as we continue visiting and interviewing local practitioners who repair, reuse, and transform objects. As with all our Repair Walks, we will collect their stories and document these often-unsung practices in our neighborhoods. Our goal is to build a digital map of the people, places, resources, and stories connected to repair and reuse traditions across Brooklyn. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event so special! repurposefulancestrylab@gmail.com @repurposefulancestry #RepurposefulAncestry #RepairWalk #RepairHeritage #RepairCommunity #CitizenLab #BrooklynEvents #FlatbushLibrary #PublicLibrary #RightToRepair @flatbushtoollibrary @architecture.and.advocacy @repaircafenyc @bklynlibrary @repaircafeelbarrio @nycresistor @orozaernesto

On Saturday, September 26, the Flatbush Library hosted the first installment of our special five-part Repair Cafe series, inspired by "Manuals By Hand: Writing as Repair." These sessions invite our community to explore the meaningful stories behind everyday objects and learn how to document them. During this first gathering, participants worked together on a hands-on project: repairing a bicycle inner tube brought in by an attendee. Working step by step, we documented both the physical repair and the personal history connected to the item, transforming the process into a zine-style manual. Through these efforts, we are helping build a living archive that preserves local knowledge, memory, and heritage for the Repurposeful Ancestry Lab. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who joined us in fixing, writing, and archiving together. Thank you to all the participants who helped make this event so special! repurposefulancestrylab@gmail.com @repurposefulancestry #RepurposefulAncestry #RepairCafe #RepairHeritage #RepairCommunity #CitizenLab #BrooklynEvents #MaterialLibrary #FlatbushLibrary #PublicLibrary #RightToRepair @flatbushtoollibrary @architecture.and.advocacy @repaircafenyc @bklynlibrary @repaircafeelbarrio @nycresistor @orozaernesto

Please join us tomorrow for our next Repair Cafe, "Materials for Repair: Using Local Resources More Creatively, From Havana to Brooklyn" Maurice Haedo Sanabria will present his experiences in Cuba as part of the Copincha makerspace, where members develop open-source solutions for local challenges, such as resource scarcity and limited internet access. His presentation will show how people everywhere can use available materials more creatively and use tools such as 3D printers as machines for repairing, reusing, and transforming everyday objects. Oct. 5 from 4:00 - 5:45 pm, at Flatbush Library This time, everybody is welcome to bring objects that are broken, damaged, or repaired. After a presentation on the theme above, we will turn to the objects that attendees bring, to fix them or study how they were repaired, while exploring the stories connected to them. "Manuals By Hand: Writing as Repair," a Repair Cafe on Sept. 26 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, at Flatbush Library This time, everybody is welcome to bring objects that are broken, damaged, or repaired. After a presentation on the theme above, we will turn to the objects that attendees bring to fix them or study how they were repaired, while exploring the stories connected to them. Manuals By Hand: Writing as Repair A Repair Café on September 26, from 2:00–4:00 PM, at Flatbush Library This Repair Cafe invites you to bring a broken, damaged, or already-repaired object. Even better if it has a story you can share about cultural heritage, personal history, a migration story, a community story, a familial story, etc. In this Repair Cafe we will also have a presentation that explores using writing and documentation as a way of exploring objects' history, repair processes, and the stories connected to them: as another tool of repair. Together, we will repair objects or document their restoration while creating zine-style manuals that preserve community knowledge, memory, and heritage. This event is part of a five-part Repair Cafe series. Through these manuals we aim to create a living archive of the Repurposeful Ancestry Lab. 🥝🍎 Food Justice Takes All of Us. 🧅🍠 On Saturday, September 19, @CaribbeanEqualityProject, NYC Council Member Rita Joseph (@ritajosephnyc), New York Communities for Change (@ny4change) — Flatbush Chapter, and Flatbush Mixtape (@flatbushmixtape) came together for our monthly Food Distribution in Flatbush, Brooklyn — Little Caribbean, at P.S. 6, Norma Adams Clemons Academy. Meet Nadia, an enthusiastic volunteer who shows up with heart, energy, and a deep commitment to community by providing interpretation in Haitian Creole. 💚🏾 It feels especially meaningful to know that our culturally responsive approach to Food Justice is resonating — and, more importantly, that it is being understood, embraced, and reflected by the people and communities we serve. Representation matters. Seeing ourselves, our experiences, and our communities reflected in this work reminds us that food justice is about more than access to food — it’s about dignity, belonging, visibility, and collective care. And it takes all of us to make this work possible. 🤝🏾 Volunteer with us!
