When your pain is dismissed, what do you do with it?
Quand votre douleur est ignorée, qu’en faites-vous ?

Blandine was living with physical pain after breast reconstruction when she was told the problem was in her head.

Instead of accepting that dismissal, Blandine turned her experience outward. She decided she needed to do something for other women in France.

That transformation is at the heart of Re/Construction: women taking experiences in which they felt unheard, dismissed or denied — and using them to create change for the women who come after them.

Who gets to decide what makes us whole?
Qui décide de ce qui nous rend entières ?

Has this happened to you?

A woman asks her doctor a question about her own body, but instead of answering her, the doctor turns to the man beside her.

That's exactly what happened to Fia in Sweden. When she asked her surgeon a question about her upcoming surgery, he directed his answer to her husband, Petter. Even Petter was taken aback.

It's a revealing moment that speaks to something larger: how often women are made to feel secondary in conversations about their own medical care.

Re/Construction follows women around the world who are challenging these assumptions and insisting that their voices be heard and their choices respected.

Who gets to decide?

Hanna knew what she wanted. Her doctor had a different idea.

When Hanna chose mastectomy without breast reconstruction, she had to argue to have that choice respected. Then her doctor told her they would reconstruct her so she could “look like a real woman.”

Re/Construction follows women like Hanna whose decisions about their own bodies have been questioned, dismissed or denied — and the movement working to change that.

Who gets to decide what makes a woman whole?

Cancer can profoundly affect our physical health. But isolation can take a profound toll on our emotional health, too.

Healing can happen when we find people who understand what we’ve been through — people who make us feel seen and less alone.

But not everyone finds that community.

Something we’ve witnessed again and again while making Re/Construction is that individual experiences can become shared experiences, shared experiences create community, and community becomes a place where healing can begin.

This June, I’ll be stepping onto the TEDx Moseley stage to talk about the silence women inherited, especially Black and Brown women, what shaped it and what it takes to break it.

Not just for us, but for the generations coming after us. Because what if so much of what we’ve been taught is “culture”… is actually inherited survival?

If this hit something in you…
you already know why this conversation matters, and maybe it’s something you were never allowed to say out loud.

If you haven’t met me before, I’m Maryam Javaid, a London based cultural educator, keynote speaker and parent mentor exploring how race, family systems and silence shape how we parent and who we become.

Tickets are selling fast. Head over to @tedxmoseley to grab yours!
