On January 30, we closed I’m Half Sick of Shadows, the solo exhibition by @davidelamontagna .

We were very happy to inaugurate the 10 documents space with this project, opening our first public research program around the theme of affection. In the exhibition, La Montagna explored intimacy as a fragile space where care, repetition, and emotional exposure coexist with tension and vulnerability.

Cantadora is a Castilian word that means "storyteller" — one voice among many — but it also evokes a precise and legendary figure: Candida Mara, the Sardinian cantadora who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries, and who, through her voice, became a vessel of collective memory. The gallery positions itself as a space dedicated to telling the stories of others, to safeguarding and amplifying them. Cantadora is therefore a place of listening, one that collects and returns narratives through the works of the invited and represented artists.

“The gallery was created with the aim of supporting artists who share our values — a thoughtful, engaged practice that is attentive to process, environment, relationships, and the political and social dimensions of artistic production, which today is increasingly precarious and vulnerable.”

On October 1st, the Indonesian collective @taring_padi opens their first exhibition in Rome at C͎A͎N͎T͎A͎D͎O͎R͎A͎, presenting a new large-scale banner created during their residency in the city.

Rooted in the collective’s foundational principles — Organise, Educate and Agitate — the project hosted by the gallery, reflects the ethos of Taring Padi and lends its name to the final exhibition. The banner — rendered in their iconic visual language — is dedicated to the stories of Sikh men and women from Punjab who live and work in the agricultural areas surrounding Rome. This community, one of the largest migrant labor forces in the region, faces systemic exploitation by the agromafia networks that dominate Italy’s rural coastlines, often under conditions akin to modern slavery.

Alongside the banner, a selection of individual works from the artists’ archives will also be on view, offering insight into the personal practices that coexist and intersect within the collective identity of Taring Padi. Artists Fitri DK, Dodi Irwandi, Ucup Baik, Setu Legi, Surya Wirawan will inhabit both the gallery and the city — building relationships and alliances with local communities, as is central to their artistic and political practice.

Siamo felici essere parte dell’inizio di una nuova avventura, una nuova galleria, un progetto nato dall’incontro tra il gallerista Enrico Palmieri e la curatrice Flavia Prestininzi.
Cantadora sarà un luogo dedicato a narrazioni collettive, pratiche artistiche radicali e visioni consapevoli. Un nome che richiama la tradizione delle “cantastorie”, per una galleria che vuole essere memoria, voce e azione.
Cantadora inaugura in un luogo speciale della nostra città con una mostra d’eccezione: la prima personale in Italia del collettivo indonesiano Taring Padi.

“If the idea of repetition is a red thread that binds together some of Rinaldi’s most recent works — as in the chain of images exhibited by the artist in “chain chain chain” (2024), a domino-effect installation in which each frame arbitrarily refers back to the previous and to the next — in the space of Lateral Roma this tendency to repeat evades the logic of the visual chain and becomes instead a choral movement, or choreography. The small-format drawings in the exhibition are visual counterpoints on the universe of consumer objects that crowd the table around which the interview takes place. They include a catalogue, a magazine, an ashtray, a cigarette packet, a glass jug, a tin can, a plate, a mug and a porcelain cup. Like real still lives, these close-ups are mundane, earthy and yet no longer have time or place. Considering the superficial noise of the film reel as a figurative element, in the same way the artist’s hand indulges the grain of the paper without lime, finding its place within the representation. The scenes nailed to the wall are repeated and the gestures are part of a controlled loop in which the only opportunity for disturbance is given to those that can move freely in the space.”

“Jacopo Rinaldi’s solo exhibition entitled ‘Ugly on the cover of time’ presents an installation for Lateral Roma, partly inspired by the cinematographic language of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, director and playwright among the most important exponents of Neuer Deutscher Film — New German Cinema. For the duration of this temporary exhibition, Lateral Roma’s space becomes a scenographic environment, and Rinaldi invites us to cross it in order to stay and try to acquire an unusual point of view. The artist’s research has been moving for some time around linguistic communication and those forms of representation and alteration of meaning that can be triggered from an image, when this is untied and removed from its context. In this case, what has been isolated and manipulated is the movement of Fassbinder’s right hand, which, in the video of a 1978 interview, looped and projected on the left wall at the end of the room, becomes the centrifugal point of the viewer’s gaze, as well as the bridging episode of the exhibition itself. The act can only be seen after having already passed a Venetian blind that segments the space into two halves: there is nothing unexpected in the time of the interview, except for an odd decentralisation of the video’s framing which, only at this precise moment and for the duration of the exhibition, follows the gesticulation of the director and his perpetually lit cigarette. The sound of the interview is present, but it is only relevant to those who speak German because we are no longer concerned with the journalist and director’s words, but solely fixated on his smoking habit. He smokes a whole packet of Marlboros, which is lying there on the table, while he talks about who-knows-what and who-knows-which of his feature films.”

Last year I was among the artists chosen for the Herbarium, a printed exhibition project curated by Dr. Cornelia Lauf and Flavia Prestininzi. This visual catalogue is part of Sztuka i Dokumentacja, an extensive Polish academic publication edited by Dr Lauf and Lukasz Guzek in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Botanical Garden of Rome, with Harvard, Cornell, Cambridge and the Normale University of Pisa serving on the advisory board.

The Herbarium involves artists and authors from different backgrounds, nationalities and disciplines, each of whom has reinterpreted one of the many botanical species depicted with incredible accuracy in the famous fresco of the Garden of Livia, from 40 bc, exhibited today at the National Roman Museum, and originally part of the Villa of Livia complex. The aim of the book was to re-imagine biodiversity for today from an ancient point of view.

I personally worked on the quince tree depicted in the Roman fresco, which is also the infamous apple of discord from Greek mythology. The phrase “to the fairest one” carried on the scroll by the bees, an iconological symbol of the divine, is a reference to the challenge of the goddess of envy Eris in the Judgement of Paris that led to the Trojan War, represented by the insidious scorpion waiting hidden among the juicy apples, ready to sting.
