The Split Hazel Basketry Garden 🌿

Better late than never. Here’s a look back at our show garden for the RHS Badminton Flower Show 2026, designed by Henry T. Pope and built by us on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.

Split hazel is one of the oldest crafts in the British countryside. Coppiced hazel is cleft by hand and woven into a material that’s both strong and beautiful. Working with basket maker Flo Hamer, we wanted to show it in a contemporary garden setting. We set it among warm joyful planting tones and a river feature, and we used paving setts and pennant stone reclaimed from local garden projects and repurposed structural concrete as an anchoring platform, the crushed brick and concrete all came from the old Bank of England site next to bristol bridge supplied by @fraterurbanquarry

We were proud to take home Best Construction for this one. Huge thanks to everyone who made it happen 🙏

Last week recap:
Made some ceramics for a fun secret lil job (not pictured)
Stayed in a cabin in the rainforest with @wildtales.earth, made lots of lovely beautiful new pals, taught some yoga, weaved a basket, got a tour through the forest, swam, saunad, drank water from the river, had a campfire and all the fun and laughter
Looked after Kewpie for a couple days
Went to see @flohamer’s exhibition at centrespace with some of my absolute faves, hugged a bear at the arnolfini where we got a surprise cameo from uncle kieran
Got a lil wine drunk with lots of lovely beautiful old pals, and recovered with a hungover sunday roast with the same pals + some extra friends

As per I took approximately 3 photos the whole week, so enjoy those mixed into a carousel of other people’s pics and videos

My heart is full, big love to all 💗

Come down to our end of show gathering, which is not actually the end! We will still be in the space until Wednesday the 30th but thought it would be a good excuse to hang out, chat wood and be nerds. Come down and hang out, bring your own snacks and drinks. We are open everyday 10-6pm so if you want to come any other time then you are very welcome.

During the pre-fest course last week ahead of the main Bowl Gathering, I made a split hazel basket. The course was taught by @flohamer who is a bloody basketry genius, and while mine certainly doesn’t look anywhere near as neat as hers, it’s not bad (in my view). The beauty of split hazel as a craft material is that it’s in pretty much every hedgerow we walk past. As well as weaving the baskets, Flo showed us how to produce the weaving materials from a simple hazel rod, so I’ll definitely be making more of these. @woodlandmakers #greenwoodworking #basketmaking

I’m a bit slow with my @tearup.fest review, I’m still trying to catch up with myself from the busyness of the last two months and trying to stabilise my health again.

This year at Tear Up we had a @woodwaterweave zone. Over the weekend Chelle and Rachel taught classes, Angela gave fascinating talks on her research into the lost Sheffield oak basket, Sandra made us a great display covering all the different basket forms made on the course so far featuring 7 makers, and various makers demonstrated. My oak riving class had to be cancelled because of fire risk, so I taught an impromptu class making steam bent ears and handles for baskets. I’m so proud of the work everyone put into it.

It was so good to meet split wood weavers from across the country and the world. These connections are precious in ways that I can’t articulate with my current sore brain. Thank you everyone that visited us
