Doelen Rotterdam, July 2022. In March 2020, I quietly retired the music side of our business after 21 years, for several reasons. I decided to only come out of the woodworks, for very special occasions. @museumnachtdenhaag is one of those special occasions. Rollgevity! Arriving in the middle portion of your fifth decade with all the numbers in the right ranges; resting heart rate, bodyweight, blood pressure, Vo2max all in the right rhythm, all in the groove. Hand-Eye Coordination and reflexes. One of five Rollgevity focus points — and the one nobody in the roller skating realm talks about. This is @mariska_mbmcoaching and my funky badself hitting a tennis ball over an improvised obstacle for reference. It looks like nothing. However, it's one of the most important things we do all week. Every roller skater is focused on legs. Very few train the part of balance that actually fails first: the eyes, the timing, the decision. Because balance is not a position you hold;  it's a correction you make, thousands of times in a short timespan. And a correction is only as fast as the system that sees the problem coming. Reaction speed doesn't announce its decline. It just quietly slows. And the day you notice it, you won't say "my reflexes are slower." You'll say "my balance feels off." You'll increase skate time and freqency. But you'll fix the wrong thing. If it's not trained, it's not maintained. Skills don't wait for you;  they evaporate. It was moving, it was well-told, and I wanted it to be true. It wasn't and when I checked it properly, the real version turned out to be better than the story. Most roller skating advice arrives already polished. Inherited cues, copied drills, questionable wisdom nobody has ever put weight on, such as the 'bend your knees' mantra. This one goes the other way. It takes four findings from outside our beloved sport : mechanics, bone physiology, connective tissue, neuroscience and asks what each of them demands of a roller skater who intends to still be rolling in thirty years safe and preferably funky. The Nervous System Hijacked On Overload, Attention and Reclaiming Leadership by Brian aka Bfunkphenomenon Roller's Digest, E-Story https://blissandbalance.nl/products/the-nervous-system-hijacked Deload. Reload. Roll. When life is cool and cruel at the same time, deloading the nervous system is a crucial necessity, to avoid getting neurologically hijacked and physically injured. I encounter people with totally hijacked nervous systems, on a daily basis, in traffic, in the supermarket, on the skatefloor and so on. A lot of that has to do with excessive screentime and folks getting caught up in algorithmic chokeholds. The effects on their dopamine system is pretty evident, but often times goes unrecognized. As a trainer - knowing how important dopamine is for fluent and controlled movement - I have a unique seat in the front row on human locomotive behaviour for decades now. Over time I have seen the detrimental effects of dopamine disruption increase, unfortunately. However, reversing the effects is very much doable, but takes effort, determination and acknowledgment that there is indeed a situation that needs to be adressed. This e-story is written for roller skaters who work on selfawareness, and want to explore what obstructs their fluency and skill development. Also written to expand knowledge and enhance tools for any serious and responsible trainer, coach or instructor, working with people to improve all they are. Soulful Sunday, Hotel New York Wilhelminakade Rotterdam. Roller Skate Jam outdoors. A personal habit that quickly turned into tradition and lasted 40+ years. Different locations in various cities were the backdrop for always soulful gatherings. Musempark Rotterdam, Hotel New York Rotterdam, Schouwburgplein Rotterdam, Vondelpark Amsterdam, Oosterpark Amsterdam, Zuiderpark Den Haag, Scheveningen Den Haag, Valkenberg Stadspark Breda, just to name the most memorable highlights. (Summers in the period 1989-1999 in Rotterdam are unmatched till this day!). Not a single session was a miss. Either 2 people joining in or 120 people showing up; literally every session in 40+ years has been pure bliss. What's not to love 'bout days like this! Wheels of Fortune & Gratitude. A little over three decades ago, a pair of wheels crossed an ocean in someone's suitcase, wrapped in a T-shirt. I've rolled many wheels, but no wheels like these. However, after quite extensive periods of intense use, I will now only occasionally skate in them. There's a reason — and it isn't sentimentality. It's closer to physics. The physics of distance, effort, and time acting on the human nervous system.
