Ellen Hanson (@ellenrhanson) explores the uneasy space between performance, spectatorship, and public unraveling. Drawing from celebrity culture, art history, and mass media, her work examines the systems of attention that shape contemporary life and the ways images become charged with psychological and cultural meaning.

Created during her time at Flower Residency (@flowerresidency) in Los Angeles, this new body of work examines the thin line between composure and collapse. Through layered imagery that moves between celebrity scandals, performance traditions, and public spectacle, Hanson investigates our fascination with moments of failure and the audiences that gather around them. Across the series, spectators become as important as the subjects themselves, blurring the boundary between those being watched and those doing the watching.

Just last week, @dianaeusebiostudio, second commissioned artist of Season Eight, welcomed more than 100 members and friends to her first institutional solo show, Field of Dreams, at @mocanomi. 🌝

Surrounded by vibrant colors and rich texture, she explained how the exhibition walls were washed with fuchsia pigment from the cochineal insect, while Spanish moss and the indigo plant were used to make yellow and blue.

Everything from the artwork to interiors pay homage to nature, home and culture. “When you work with natural dyes and materials, you can’t be certain of the outcome. The practice is to be patient and accept the uncertainty that comes with the process.”

Embracing the unknown feels familiar at Commissioner, where we have collectively committed to a shared vision of supporting artists and collecting art without first knowing who will be commissioned or what they will create. It’s a human approach to stewardship that prioritizes people over objects, and relationships over transactions. Could it be that this element of surprise—the unknowing—cultivates the conditions for joy, delight, and connection?

Take a deeper dive into Eusebio’s practice at the panel discussion today at the museum:
