Lunges – What Muscles Are You Targeting?
Different lunge variations change joint position, centre of mass, and muscle demand. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Arabesque Lunge
Targets: Glute max & hamstrings
Why? The hip hinge position increases demand on the posterior chain, meaning the glutes and hamstrings control the descent and drive hip extension on the way up.

Lateral Lunge
Targets: Glute med, glute max, quadriceps & adductors
Why? The side step challenges frontal plane strength, requiring hip stabilisers and adductors to control the movement and return to standing.

Lateral Lunge
Targets: Glute med, glute max, quadriceps & adductors
Why? The side step challenges frontal plane strength, requiring hip stabilisers and adductors to control the movement and return to standing.

Curtsey Lunge
Targets: Glute med & glute min
Why? The cross-behind step challenges hip stability in the frontal and transverse planes, requiring the glute med and min to stabilise the pelvis and control femoral alignment.

90/90 Lunge (Upright Torso)
Targets: Quadriceps & glute max
Why? An upright torso keeps the centre of mass over the knee, increasing the load on the quadriceps during knee flexion and extension.

90/90 Lunge (Forward Lean)
Targets: Glute max & hamstrings
Why? A slight hip hinge shifts the load to the posterior chain, increasing activation of the glutes and hamstrings.
