Finally had some time to finish one of my own projects. This 42” Elm Burl coffee table has been sitting on my work bench for a few months now waiting for completion. Started with these amazing pieces of wood from @workerswood.ca then had them planed to 2.5” thick, fit them to my mold and poured 6 gallons of very slightly tinted Ryver deep pour epoxy from @limitless_epoxy . Next step was to find the perfect base for this project so I contacted @flowyline_design and had them ship me their “Tulipe” base which I think compliments the wood as well as our decor. A lot of work but worth it.
Hint - there might be a small amount of this wood left @workerswood.ca

A look at the making of a circular concrete coffee table I built for our guesthouse.

The finished room also features work by two other artists: the large artwork hanging above the sofa is by David McCarthy, and the ceramic piece displayed on the coffee table is by Mike Griffin. Both deserve credit for their beautiful contributions to the space.

For the coffee table, I wanted to combine concrete, clear resin, and a sculptural metal base, bringing together materials with very different textures and characteristics.

I built a circular form for the tabletop, suspending mounting bolts inside before pouring the concrete so they would be embedded in the finished slab.

Once the concrete cured, I ground down the underside and poured a roughly 3/4-inch layer of clear resin. After curing, I beveled, sanded, and polished the resin to create a smooth, uniform surface.

The resin provides additional strength, but it was also important to me that the underside feel as finished as the top. Even the parts people don’t normally see should feel good when touched.

A look through the photos:

1 - The finished table in our guesthouse living room, alongside two concrete-topped side tables I also built. Artwork by David McCarthy above the sofa and ceramics by Mike Griffin on the table.

2 - Leveling and installing the tabletop.

3 - Building the circular form and its wooden supports.

4 - The completed form, ready for casting.

5 - The underside of the concrete top, showing the embedded mounting bolts before the resin was added.

The sculptural metal base was purchased from Flowyline Design in Carson, California. Its angular geometry makes an interesting contrast with the smooth, circular top.

I enjoy making furniture that rewards a closer look, including the details that aren’t immediately visible.

More guesthouse furniture projects to come.

So incredibly excited that I was honored with the privilege of making two end tables to be auctioned off for @kidsbeatingcancer ! Kids Beating Cancer has been a steadfast supporter of childhood cancer research, something that is near and dear to my heart. These cherry and maple end tables were not possible without the kind support of @flowyline_design , who provided the bases.
