Ipsilateral split squats are one of my favourite split squat variations and using the rig for balance only not to help you lift the weight 😂
But what I see most the time is what I keep banging on about a lot lately. People really loading through their heels and hinging to the point where they kiss their knee cap.
You really dont need to do that. Stay upright, bring your stance in, push through the forefoot and keep your knee inline with the big toe and feel the difference. Maintain that neutral pelvis throughout and brace your core!

I forgot to turn the camera to centre yeah I know. Call the cops if you have a problem take it up with them

If you are trying to perform barbell RDL's to target glutes. Maintaining your midfoot pressure and staying out of the heels and not allowing your knees to travel forwards or backwards, will place more demand on the glutes. You will be weaker, it will feel harder and your ROM will typically reduce but thats ok. Give it a go and see if you can notice the difference.
If you want to do heavy as fuck RDL's and get some big weight moving then you will probably shift into the heels a bit and will move at the knees more.
Its all about what do you want to achieve

I used to coach split squats and steps ups the whole shabang with a vertical shin hinge forward etc.
This isnt wrong and when executed properly is still effective for glutes. But majority of the time everyone is loading into their heels and have a shitload of weight on their back foot as well.
But allowing that knee to travel over the toes keeping the torso upright with a neutral pelvis and all the pressure through the front of the foot, has been a game changer for myself and many clients.
This is probably a controversial take and all my clients ask me the same questions. But once they execute it the way I ask the result is always the same.

Going through hip Thrusts with flynn. Something I hear and see a lot is people feel their hamstrings mostly when doing hip thrust, your hamstrings are doing something, but we want to feel majority in the glutes.
Sometimes just scaling back that weight and focusing on the basics can be and has been a game changer for a lot of my clients. Along with a couple other simple cues and as you can see. 40 kilos absolutely humbles flynn here!
Love it!
