Healing is a practice. Discipline is a prayer. Community is the medicine.

Here at the FREEdom School of Homies Empowerment, we’re honored to open our doors every Wednesday to Filipino Martial Arts with our beloved teacher Guro Jay Pugao of FMABA (Filipino Martial Arts Bay Area) & VSCK Global.

Interested in learning and studying the Filipino Martial Arts of Kali, Eskrima, Arnis, and Sikaran?! Come learn the Visayan-style Corto Kadena Eskrima of Maestro Umpad, an ancestral art carried with love, rigor, and respect, right here in Deep East Oakland.

This is more than self-defense. It’s culture. It’s language. It’s leadership. It’s restorative justice in motion. Our young people and our families deserve spaces where they can build strength in body, mind, and spirit, together.

Katatagan • Pagkakaisa • Katarungan • Kahusayan
Resilience • Solidarity • Justice • Skillfulness

One of our instructors, Guro Jay Jasper Pugao @fmatrix01 will be teaching and sharing at the LIFE IS LIVING festival at Defremery Park celebrating the Legacy of the Black Panther party for Self Defence and ancestor, Master Bruce Lee’s Legacy here in Oakland.
@lifeislivingfest
@mrdavis510

From Dr. Hodari Davis: The full name ,“The Black Panther Party for Self Defense” is a reminder, an affirmation of the mission. This party had a purpose, to defend self, community
and each other, defend the people, from the forces aiming to diminish our lives, and our power.

These elders and ancestors were building machines to defend us, they believed
that “pending revolution” we needed to emphasize our survival. This included food programs, health clinics, mutual aide, a newspaper, a school, intergenerational activities and more.

At Life is Living, this year we are going to
highlight traditional self defense to bring awareness of the legacy of martial arts in Oakland, the incredible schools and teachers who offer classes around the Town.

We will feature Martial Arts exhibitions and workshops for attendees, especially young people, to gain some hands-on experience in various combat arts.

the MOW Gun Club will present an introductory gun training workshop, and a workshop on preparing survival backpacks. To help us we have enlisted
The Bruce Lee Foundation to highlight his unique relationship to Oakland, and the Black Panther Party Alumni Leadership Network to tie it all together. Self Defense is more than combat, but in our conversation about survival it is critical we learn how to protect ourselves. #lifeisliving #apartyforselfdefense #weallwegot #oakland #defremerypark
