I lost my better half two weeks ago. Scout did everything in this life, besides play fetch.

He was loved by many, but somehow always loved you more, and I was the one lucky soul who got to be his dad.

Having my soul dog for 15 years and more than half of my life still seems unfair, but he did his job and did it to perfection.

Guiding him to the finish line of this lifetime is truly one of the hardest things I’ll do.

Please send me any Scout memories you have. I know that the majority of you from the past decade and a half were only here for him anyway 😂

Georgia had been the last state on the east coast that I hadn’t been to yet and so in the autumn of 22’ on my way back to Jersey for the holidays I took the southern route from Austin, Texas.

I knew that if I timed it out just right I’d be able to catch some fall foliage in the southeast but before heading to the mountains I made a pit stop in Macon to check an item off my bucket list.

You see, the Allman brothers band is my all time favorite music group and they would do a run at the Beacon theater in New York every March, but I never got a chance to see them there. In 2014 the Brothers would play their final run there, and after that I’d never see them again.

I would have given anything to go to one of those final shows but I was deep in the throes of my addiction. A slave to something that was robbing me not just of music but of everything. I remember begging my family for money for a ticket, but they rightfully refused, assuming that money would go up my nose, and they probably were right.

So almost 10 years later, after almost all the remaining members had passed I took a trip to “the big house” in Macon where it all began. I visited the cemetery where the boys would get high and write songs like “in memory of Elizabeth Reed” and others. I went to H&H restaurant and took pictures where their first album covers were shot.

It was such a cool and meaningful experience for me and a reminder of how blessed I am to have a second chance at life and not be held back anymore, at least not by the chains of addiction.
