Folsom Rodeo Cross #2 — 7th place! Whew!

About 3 laps in and my back was already screaming! Went wider on the tires compared to last week, but not sure they were any faster. Grip was decent, though! Stayed upright, kept pushing, and had fun getting absolutely dipped in mud.

Two bike washes and a drivetrain cleanse later, and she’s STILL a little crunchy.

Mud, suffering, and good times. Bring on the finale! 📸 @jnamba

HOLY HECK!

We're already FOUR races into the BASP season, and we're pretty sure we've climbed at least 40,000 feet by now.

Between Shoreline Shredder, Vallejo Velocity, and two days of Surf City CX, we've somehow managed to turn riding bicycles around in circles into a full blown mountain climbing expedition.

We'd like to formally apologize to everyone's legs.

But we have some good news.

THE FLAT RACES ARE COMING!

And we're kicking things off THIS SUNDAY with MARE ISLAND UCX!

That's right. We're trading the hills for historic naval shipyards, waterfront racing, concrete bunkers, massive industrial cranes, and all sorts of obstacles that have absolutely no business being part of a bicycle race.

Welcome to what we like to call THE BEST URBAN CYCLOCROSS RACE IN THE WORLD.

At least until someone proves us wrong.

Mare Island is one of the most unique courses you'll race anywhere. One minute you're flying along the Napa River waterfront, the next you're riding through WWII era bomb shelters, and before you know it you're weaving your way through a shipyard that's been around since 1854.

And the best part?

Mare Island Brewing Co. is right there waiting for you when you're done.

But don't leave too early.

After the final race of the day, we're bringing back the legendary **LONESOME LOUIS RELAY!**

Four racers. Four laps. One bike.

Because apparently regular cyclocross wasn't ridiculous enough.

So give your climbing legs a break, dust off your BASP number plate, and get yourself registered for Race 5.

NOVEMBER 1ST. MARE ISLAND UCX.

Less climbing. More chaos.

BASP is back.

**FOUR RACERS. FOUR LAPS. ONE BIKE.**

What could possibly go wrong?

The legendary **LONESOME LOUIS RELAY** is returning to Mare Island UCX on November 1st, and we're bringing back one of the most ridiculous traditions in BASP history.

Here's how it works.

Get a team of four people together.

Pick ONE bike.

Each teammate races one lap before handing that same bike off to the next rider.

That's it. Four people. Four laps. One bicycle.

Sounds simple, right?

Now imagine four grown adults trying to agree on a saddle height.

Your 6'4" teammate might have a slight advantage over your 5'2" teammate. Or maybe not. We're not here to solve your team's poor planning.

We're just here to watch it happen.

The relay kicks off **after the final race of the day**, so stick around, grab your friends, and get ready for what might be the most entertaining race of the entire weekend.

And yes, there are bragging rights on the line.

**The top three teams will make the podium**, and the winning team will have their names etched into the legendary Lonesome Louis trophy, proudly displayed at Mare Island Brewing Co.

A permanent reminder that four people somehow managed to share a bicycle without destroying their friendships.

So start recruiting your teammates now.

Find your fastest friends. Find your funniest friends. Find someone who owns a bike that might actually fit all four of you.

Or don't. That could be even more entertaining.

**NOVEMBER 1ST. MARE ISLAND UCX.**

Come for the urban cross.

Stay for the absolute chaos.

**BASP is back.**

That was so fun! It was raining and muddy, but these riders were undeterred! Everyone was smiling and cheering the riders on. The crowd was also generously sharing beverages with the riders (for hydration, of course). Frank also gave me the lay of the land and showed me some great spots to capture the action. I can’t wait for next week when they’ll put on the “Costume Edition 🎃” of the race. No rain in the forecast!! Please DM me if you want the link to the Google Photos album. There are > 200 photos in the album.

I took my Nikon D7000 + the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-f4 zoom + a Nikon SB800 strobe with TTL flash cable. I wanted a camera that I could abuse in these wet conditions. #rodeocross #actionphotography #folsomrodeocross #nikond7000 #sigma1770mm

WANT TO HELP US TAKE OVER A NAVAL SHIPYARD?

Mare Island UCX is coming up on November 1st, and we're looking for some awesome people to help us pull off what we like to call the best urban cyclocross race in the world.

Turns out, transforming a historic naval shipyard into a cyclocross course takes a little more work than putting a few cones in a parking lot.

Who would've thought?

We're looking for volunteers to help us with:

Friday and Saturday: Course setup

Sunday and Monday: Course teardown

Race Day: Course marshals, registration support, and timing support

Whether you've got a few hours to spare or want to spend the whole day hanging out with us, we'd love to have you be part of the crew.

And because we know your time is valuable, ALL VOLUNTEERS WILL RECEIVE:

A FREE race entry to any Bear Race Events race of your choice!

FREE food during your volunteer shift!

That's right. Help us put on a bike race, and we'll give you an opportunity to come suffer at another one for free.

Seems like a pretty fair deal to us.

But seriously, these events wouldn't happen without the people who show up early, stay late, help build the course, keep racers safe, and make everything run smoothly.

Our volunteers are a huge part of what makes BASP such a great community, and we appreciate every single person who lends a hand.

So come hang out, meet some great people, help us turn a piece of California history into a cyclocross playground, and earn yourself a free race while you're at it.

MARE ISLAND UCX. NOVEMBER 1ST.

Let's make this one a good one.

Never raced cyclocross before? Your first Nutty Cross is FREE.

Not a discount. Not a raffle. Free! Because the best way to grow this sport is to get new people on the start line.

Here's how it works: email chris@boundlesslocomotion.com with the subject "First CX race — free entry" and tell us your name, birthday, which C race you want, and why Nutty. That's all we need.

Worried about the bike? Don't be. Mountain bike, gravel bike, whatever you've got, run what you have. Worried you'll be slow? Everyone's first race is a mess. That's kind of the point. It's hard, it's muddy, and it's not that serious. Finishing is the accomplishment.

Sunday, November 22 at @ruhstallerbeer Farm in Dixon, a walnut orchard attached to a brewery, live music, beer, and food trucks. California's biggest cyclocross race.

Send this to the friend who keeps saying "someday."

Already raced CX before? Registration is open! There’s a link in bio.

THE MOST UNIQUE CYCLOCROSS COURSE IN CALIFORNIA?

We think Mare Island UCX has a pretty strong argument.

Most cyclocross courses have grass, dirt, sand, and maybe a few barriers thrown in to remind you that riding your bike isn't always an option.

Mare Island?

We're sending you through a historic naval shipyard.

We're talking obstacles along the Napa River waterfront, riding beneath massive industrial cranes, and racing through concrete air raid and bomb shelters built immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

Yes, you read that correctly.

You'll be racing your cyclocross bike through actual WWII era bomb shelters.

Mare Island was established in 1854 as the first naval shipyard on the West Coast. For generations, this place was building and repairing ships that helped shape American history.

And now, over 170 years later, we're using it to see how fast people in spandex can ride bicycles around old military buildings.

Progress.

But that's what makes Mare Island UCX so special.
Every corner of this course has a story. Every turn brings something completely different. One minute you're racing along the waterfront, the next you're ducking through a concrete bunker, and before you know it you're charging beneath towering shipyard cranes.

There's really nothing else quite like it.

And with Mare Island Brewing Co. sitting right along the course, it's just as much fun to watch the racing as it is to be out there suffering through it.

We genuinely believe this is one of the most unique and most fun cyclocross courses in California.

And we're pretty sure you'll agree once you race it.
