Shortly after 7:30 AM New York time on October 24, 2003, British Airways Flight BA002 departed from Runway 31 Left at JFK Airport. The aircraft was G-BOAG; a sharp, slender delta-wing jet carrying 100 passengers on Concorde’s final scheduled commercial flight. Up in the cockpit, Chief Concorde Pilot Captain Mike Bannister, Senior First Officer Jonathan Napier, and Flight Engineer David Hoyle prepared to fly the demanding, established noise-abatement profile known as the Canarsie departure.

Because Runway 31 Left points northwest, a straight-line climb out would send the aircraft directly over the dense residential blocks of Queens. To limit noise over these nearby residential areas, the departure routed the aircraft over Jamaica Bay, requiring an early left turn after takeoff. This procedure kept the heavy sound footprint of the four Rolls-Royce Olympus engines concentrated over open water.

When the brakes released, the afterburners engaged with a deep rumble that shook the airport perimeter. The jet accelerated down the concrete and lifted off into the morning sky. Early in the climb, the crew initiated the sharp left bank above the bay. The standard noise-abatement procedure called for cancelling reheat and reducing engine power to limit noise over the shoreline.

Once clear of the coast, Concorde maintained a subsonic climb as it tracked away from the land. Only after reaching the designated offshore supersonic acceleration area did the crew relight the afterburners, pushing the aircraft past the sound barrier and upward toward its high-altitude supersonic cruise. Around 4:05 PM British Summer Time, the jet touched down at London Heathrow.

As the aircraft curved over the bay, it marked the end of a familiar sight for New York: Concorde departing on a scheduled passenger service. That morning turn was a quiet testament to the generations of people who built, maintained and looked up at it in wonder. Supersonic flight had redefined how close the world could feel but its parting moment was defined by the manual skill of a crew gracefully guided by the shape of the coast leaving an indelible memory with the city anchored below.
