A few months ago I was gifted a stack of vintage Signs of the Times magazines by local legends Pete & Lee. Most of them were from the 70s and 80s, their prime years painting signs here in Portland.
Flipping through those pages, it became obvious that vinyl was going to be the next big shift. It felt like looking at a turning point in the history of the craft. You start to see it slowly: ads for plotters and profits promised by the square foot. Vinyl creeping in while ads for 1Shot and Ronan paint become fewer, sitting next to “learn sign painting by mail.”

At the time, it probably felt like progress. Looking at it now, from 2026, it’s easier to see what followed. The trade didn’t disappear, but it got close. By the late 2000s, a lot of brushes were put down. What survived did so because people chose to keep painting anyway. Through workshops, gatherings like Letterheads, and projects like the movie @sign_painters, the craft built resilience, newcomers joined, and we kept it going.
That made me think about what we’re living through now. Different technologies, same tension.

For me, resisting AI has less to do with fear and more to do with staying connected to the process. Not skipping the process in the name of the outcome.
A lot of these tools are built to remove friction. To make things faster, cleaner, more efficient. And sometimes that’s useful. But the part I care about in my practice lives in the process of making. The repetition, the mistakes, the adjustments. That’s where the relationship with the craft is built.

So I’ve been choosing to stay engaged with the slower side of it. Letting the work take time. Letting imperfections show. Trusting that the human element is what creates a lasting impact.
Inspired by the lettering, layouts, and textures in those magazines, I worked with my in-house designer to turn those references into something new that reflects where we are now and how we choose to work:

I’ve been working on this book since last year in collaboration with @h_e_c_h_i_z_a and I’m so excited to finally see it in print and be able to share it with y’all!

My next book: “Hand-painted in Mexico: Some Mexican Rótulos” is a publication that documents hundreds of signs that I have photographed during my trips to various parts of Mexico since my first visit in 2016.

The idea for this photobook came after the erasure of signs in Colonia Cuathemoc in 2022 by the administration of Mayor Sandra Cuevas in Mexico City. This whitewashing sparked outrage among locals over the loss of their visual identity and motivated them to organize and defend the signs under the hashtag #conlosrotulosno 🖌️

To share reflections on sign graphics and amplify the voices of those who fought to restore the signs to Cuathemoc, the book includes writings in Spanish by:
