Out in todays @ft_houseandhome Sculptor @nicolaturner.art at her Georgian home in Bath, which she shares with her husband Alf Coles, Professor of Maths Education at the University of Bristol.

Her design aesthetic, honed over years, designing sets for, among others, the Royal Opera House, the RSC, San Francisco Opera and inside her own litany of homes, is the perfect metaphor for her art, which explores the essence of embedded memory discovered in buildings, materials and furniture.

Her extraordinary sculptures, examine the meaning and structure of memory, and repressed stories, they are often black, fat, vast tendrils, that can be ten-metres high or more, resembling tentacle-like limbs.

Spilling from windows, cascading across buildings...her current show just opened @annelyjuda and without doubt needs to be seen - a black organism demanding your attention as soon as you exit Bond St tube - a beautiful raw anomalous manifestation crawling down a building in Hanover Square...crafted from waste materials - raw, untreated wool or horsehair from old furniture, (she was recently gifted a 10ft pile of ancient, stained horsehair mattresses from @rabycastleofficial )

Her home is a beautiful ode to this constant journey of story and embedded memory, she relishes the patina of ancient Bath stone walls, wrapping each room in her 1790 house in muted earthy tones inspired entirely from the flesh of a fig.

Cabinets and furniture are exchanged with an openminded perspective from her studios, @form_i_c_a a community space and collection of artists’ studios which she opened several years ago, and her artworks, legs from tables, tops removed and used in the kitchen or in a sculpture. “I work instinctively,” she says.

Her home is beautiful and was perfectly captured by the very talented @imogen__rosemary 📸

In 2023 I founded @form_i_c_a which is an old industrial unit now housing 7 artist studios and a versatile communal space in Bath, UK. ✨

While documenting my work recently @maxwellattenborough captured a few shots of my studio there and the shared communal area.
I love this space and it’s an honour to work alongside the 6 other artists at form-ica.

The last image shows work packed up getting ready for my solo exhibition with @annelyjuda opening 16 Hanover Square, London 1-10-26. Thanks @catattaway for help with all the wrapping. 🎁

As an artist who works with horsehair I am deeply grateful to @rabycastleofficial for letting me work with their old mattresses that were no longer in use. The mattresses were fully recorded, documented and samples kept for future study before I was able to collect them. We also had to confirm the van could get through the Raby Castle portcullis!

Horsehair is one of my favorite materials to use. It is rich with history and I am fascinated by the secrets that are embedded in the material. Mattresses are present at major points in our lives. At conception, birth and death and the many nights in between.

I have been using horsehair in my work since 2019 and some of you might have seen it in my work The Meddling Fiend @royalacademyarts in 2024 or Echoed Ecstacy at Coker Court as part of @odartsfest 2023. My next installation using horsehair will be on the façade of 16 Hanover Square, London as part of my solo exhibition @annelyjuda ‘I tear Secrets from your Yielding Flesh’ which opens on October 1st.

Time’s Scythe @yspsculpture in the Chapel is on view till the Autumn. In fact it was the day after opening there that I drove an hours north to Raby Castle to meet Lady Barnard and to be shown the room of mattresses! Thank you. I look forward to start using these in my work. ✨
