“Engage your core” might be the most common cue in fitness, and honestly one of the most misunderstood 🙈

So many people hear it and immediately suck in, brace and hold their breath. I get it! It feels like hard work. But that gripping actually makes it harder for your deep core to do its job.

Real core engagement is softer and smarter. It starts with your breath, it works with your pelvic floor, and it feels more like a gentle hug around your middle than a clench.

Once this clicks, everything changes. Your Hundred feels different, your back feels supported and your neck finally stops taking over 💛

Save this one and try the exhale cue in your next class. I’d love to hear if it helps!

After ten years of teaching, I can usually tell what your body’s up to before we’ve finished the first exercise 👀

Gripping the footbar, holding your breath, flaring ribs, shrugging shoulders, rushing the reps. Sound familiar? None of it means you’re doing it wrong. It’s just your body bracing for effort the only way it knows how.

Here’s what helps:
✨ Loosen your grip so your core does the work, not your hands
✨ Exhale through the hardest part of the move
✨ Let your ribs knit down toward your hips
✨ Slide your shoulders away from your ears
✨ Slow down. Slower is almost always harder (in the best way)

Pilates isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about moving better 💛

Now send this to your Pilates buddy who does #3 every single class. You know who they are 😂

A contemporary take on the Bridge Extension that challenges the body in a different way. With the lighter spring, your hamstrings have to work harder to control the movement, while your glutes and core help keep the pelvis stable.

unilateral reformer flow: full body, with an exttttra focus on obliques + core.

Fit is @permission.co (10/10)
studio is @fortidespilates

single sided (Aka unilateral) work is some of my favourite especially on the reformer as it really allows you to notice the subtle imbalances in the body. Not necessarily bad things but just interesting + helpful to notice! then you can ponder the why and address anything that needs focusing on (hi side sleepers/one side dependant folks like me!)

all of this was on a blue spring - some folks might prefer a red 🌶️🥵💦

full Pilates reformer class plan!!!!! SAVE this for teaching inspo 🤸🏼‍♀️💅🏼🥰

fit: @437
studio: @fortidespilates

this class is sneaky!!! The standing hinge sequence really builds until you finish off with the single leg squat + kick. the seared core with a light sprint can be super challenging depending on how far back you lean, but do ensure you’re keeping a C-curve and the work in the abdominals so you don’t roll backwards (🫪)

let me know what you think of this one!! follow for more flows + full class plans!
